Phone open for GPS to work?

May buy a versa today, may buy an ionic.

Does the app need to be open for connected gps or can my phone be resting? What if the app is open but the screen turns off?

On Android, the app should be running at least in the background.  I allow my phone to "idle" while tracking with the app in the foreground.  My screen darkens.  My phone is strapped to my arm.  Not sure what is recommend for Apple.

 

However, if exacting measurements of distance, pace, split times etc are especially important to you, the Ionic has a built-in GPS.  You can leave your phone at home.  It should be more accurate for distance although I have never used an Ionic.
