I've been skeptical of these "step counters" and upon trying mine out ive confirmed its a load of bs. I took 6 actual steps ans watched.....nothing. Took 4 more and sat down and suddenly my steps increased by 5.

You are the one calling it a "step counter".
I consider it an activity tracker, sleep measurement device, database system with analysis of all my data, social platform, etc that measures heart rate, active minutes, steps, etc; and organizes the data for me, and keeps it all in their database where I can check years' worth of personal data, and compete it challenges with my Fitbit "friends", encouraging me to increase my activity, plus displays my data on my wrist, along with date, day, and time, stopwatch, countdown timer, alarms, electronic wallet, keeps track of my sleep including stages as well as many other features I won't go into right now.
For me, with all those benefits, it is a bargain even if I can find a way to trick the step count to be off by 10.
But if exactly accurate step count is the one thing you are looking for, get a plastic clicker to pin on your belt. But don't expect to get anything else. And if you want daily total, write it down at midnight and do a manual reset at same time every day
