I have an email notification which will not clear. Didn't have a problem until a few days ago. The original email has long since been deleted from my email inbox but the notification still shows on my watch, despite numerous attempts to clear all messages.

Seems odd that an email notification cannot be deleted from your device, thanks for troubleshooting this prior to posting. If you haven't already done so, I suggest you to try the following steps to restart your device:
