Hi, the button/touch thing on the side of my Versa 3 doesn't work any more. Pressing or feeling the button doesn't do anything. I can wake the Fitbit up by synching, but as soon as the display goes black, I cannot do anything except synch it again.

I'm glad to hear you managed to figure out how the button works. As you mentioned, place both forefinger and thumb each side of face and pressing gently, also make sure to cover the entire button with your finger. For more information, see How do I navigate my Fitbit device?

the sensitivity of this "button" is absolutely broken. it took me 1 hour research to figure out how this thing work.
you have to squeeze the watch with pressure from both sides (left and right) to get any reaction.
put your finger on the one side and your thumb on the other side and then try to find the trigger point on the button side.
its kind of ridiculous, but once you figure it out you know how to do it.
