I finally updated my tracker. I called Fitbit and asked if it was ok to do so and I was told to do the following steps which worked.
1. Have a computer or laptop with internet
2. Plug the Fitbit into the computer with internet
3. Update the software.
I plugged mine into the computer with the charger it came with and I used my phone to update it and everything worked and I am getting notifications.

@Jenmack, It's great to see you in our Fitbit forums. I'm so glad to hear that you managed to get your Fitbit Versa Lite updated. Thank you for sharing the steps that helped you complete the update. I'm sure that this info will help other users that experience the same issue.
