Versa Stats Tracking Issues

Hi Fitbit team & other community members,

I just got my Fitbit Versa yesterday. Started using the very same day. Today is my 2nd day of usage and I have started noticing anomalies in its stats tracking. Issues which I have encountered so far:

  1. Higher step count than usual - While I am riding my motorcycle; versa increases my step counts. How can my steps increase when I am sitting idle on my motorcycle.
  2. Unusual heart rate - While sitting idle at home or on my motorcycle; I don't see a reason why my resting heart rate would pace above 100. I am 32 years old and have no heart issues.
  3. Floor counts - Just like unusual step counts; floor counts also increase, which should not happen if I have not stepped even a single floor.
  4. Calorie burn - Since already step & floor counts are irregular; this is understandable that my calorie count would automatically link with the physical stats and would appear higher than usual.

I changed my fitness tracking gear just because I thought that Fitbit would provide better metrics as it started with health tracking as prime objective but it is not meeting my expectations.

I am currently on latest firmware i.e. 32.32.12.19. I have few questions to Fitbit team before I take my final decision on leaving fitbit community and returning my Versa for final:

  • As I have read at different threads, people have had issues with unusual step count, floor count, etc. while charging and so on. Is it a regular issue with versa or its just a firmware bug?
  • If this is a firmware bug then what is the timeline by which it can be resolved?
  • If it can't be resolved then please inform so that I will return my versa for good before returnable period gets over which is till 22nd Oct'18.

Looking forward for a genuine reply from Fitbit team.

@rockinfuture Welcome! It's good that the community is growing! Sorry to hear about your issues with your new Versa.

1.- Your tracker will detect the movement on your arm and translate that movement into steps. There are situations in which your arm may move but you won't be actually walking. This may happen when you are playing the drums, burping a baby or clapping. It can also happen when driving. You can negate these steps by logging a driving activity. You can try wearing your tracker on your non dominant hand but select that hand as dominant on the tracker’s settings to make it less sensitive to movement.

2.- You can try these suggestions to improve the heart rate reading. Also allow a few days (ideally a few weeks) to feed enough information to your account but I understand that this may not happen as it depends on you choosing to keep the Versa or not.

3.- Your device uses it's altimeter to detect variance in altitude. It will count 1 floor for every 10 ft it detects you climbed. There are situations that may affect the floor count like stormy weather (that has an actual impact on atmospheric pressure), gusts of wind, an AC unit in a close room or opening a door. I suggest you start by cleaning the back of the tracker with cotton and rubbing alcohol then use compressed air at a distance to clear the altimeter's opening. Finally restart it.

4.- As you mentioned your calorie burn depends on your activity and heart rate.

Regarding the steps counted while charging. This isn't happening to all Versas but the issue is being investigated and hopefully a solution will be released. I don't have any specific timeframe but you can check this thread for updates.

Let me know how it goes!

@AlvaroFitbitThanks for the sharing these advises but somehow I am not convinced with the offered solutions. I have somehow found that other trackers have no such issues pertaining to extra step counts of such intensity.

Also, I was already wearing my versa at suggested position on my wrist but even after that such exaggeration of resting heart rate was not acceptable. I simultaneously tried another tracker wherein I found my resting heart rate much different from what was being measured by versa.

With all above efforts; I finally decided to apply factory reset. Post this, I started encountering another issue wherein my handset/fitbit app was no longer identifying this versa unit. I realized from Fitbit's supported device page that my handset Xiaomi A1 is currently not being supported (even though versa identified it during first attempt).

I have tried several times now but it is no longer identifying.

Considering all these discomforting situations which I have encountered in past few hours/days, I have finally initiated return of my versa.

Hope Fitbit team invests focused resources to resolve these issues in future but as of now these temporary solutions are not convincing enough to carry on with Fitbit.
