Versa Sync Issues - some things to consider

My wife and I just upgraded from our trusty old Blazes to Versas. The Blazes were not holding a charge well any more, and my wife's stopped tracking her heart rate. As happens whenever we switch to a new device, there are "growing pains". This time it revolved around syncing via the smartphone app.

Here are some things to consider while you're troubleshooting:

  • Is the Fitbit app actually updating? I noticed that syncing doesn't seem to work well while Google Play is downloading and updating the app to a new version. Makes sense, but not an obvious thing to look for.
  • Do you have old Fitbit devices connected to your app/account? I had this problem when I upgraded from the Fitbit One to the Blaze years ago. This time around I observed my wife's app was still attempting to sync to the Blaze. Her sync problems seemed to be resolved when I removed the old Blaze device from her account via her smartphone app. Of course if you have a brand new account and this is your first device, this will not help you. But I hope it helps someone out there. I didn't see this item listed in any other solutions out there.
  • I noticed some folks think the watch updates via wifi. I think that's incorrect. I read somewhere, the wifi is only for linking to music sites. I could be wrong, but I think the watch only syncs to the Fitbit website (and your account there) through the Bluetooth connection to the Fitbit app on a smartphone. So the phone needs to be connected to the web (wifi or cell data), and the watch needs to be connected to the phone via Bluetooth. If there are other sync paths, I'm unaware of them.

Hopefully this helps someone out there.

@dawdillon It's great to see that you've visited the Fitbit Community!

Sorry for the late reply. Thank you so much for sharing these suggestions and your experience with your Versa devices. I am sure this will help other members that may find themselves in this situation. Since you are new to the Versa I suggest you check its manual.

I'll be around.
