So story story story... Here's the coles notes:
Purchased Christmas 2018 (in and around then)
Phone: Samsung S9
Issues began: October 2019
Issues: Would not sync with my phone. no text, no calls, no emails, no updates, no step counter etc.... had to do it manually and even still it was sporadic. Wouldn't sync.
Talked to customer support November 2019 - Went through their whole troubleshoot gauntlet. Didn't fix it. They told me an update was coming to fix the syncing issues and believed them. Update came either late November or December and still syncing was not working properly. It worked for maybe a week and stopped again.
Talked to their customer support again in March, went through the troubleshoot gauntlet again and didn't work and this time they told me "We don't have a fix, but are working on a solution" basically saying 'Tough' you're stuck with a watch that doesn't work.
I would definitely NOT RECOMMEND Fitbit to anyone. Their customer support has a basic trouble shoot which they run you through and if they get lucky and the watch works, they claim it as an success story. If it doesn't they tell you, sorry but not sorry, thanks for your money for a watch that doesn't work as advertised and good luck.
They claim to care but they really don't. If they did they'd try to do more than just troubleshoot and give up.

So an update:
Tried going for a bike ride after the latest tracker update.
And of course has made things worse. It doesn't sync for the bike ride. Before at least I could get it to sync, start the bike exercise and it would actually track it. Now since the latest update, it doesn't show map, or distance, or even connects to my phone, unless I do a manual sync and that is the only time it connects.

So tried loading Strava for biking and it wouldn't sync. I couldn't manually sync it so it would recognize my account. So periodically with a manual sync, it will actually sync to my phone and record a bike ride, how ever the distance is all over the map. my wife has a Fitbit Charge and we never have the same distance... usually off by .5km or so, you would think, being only a couple meters a part, following one another, the distance would be relatively close. not .5km or more difference.
So once again fitbit is a disappointment.
Any recommendations for a new watch. non-fitbit. Beyond fedup with this "smart" watch

And of course another poor/lucky update. So my "athletic" rubber strap has broke from literally putting it on. I typically only used it for swimming or when the grey fabric one started to smell a bit and needed a wash. So just wore it a handful of times. So fortunately i don't have to buy another fitbit watch band.
