My Versa device has detected and recorded swimming when washing my cars- strange or correct?!?

Yes.
It is trying to figure out what you are doing just from the movement pattern of one wrist. I'm a bit surprised it can figure anything out other than plain Walk. If you want to prevent 'Swim' detection, on phone app tap on exercise tile, then gear icon near top right, and disable any activity you never do that you don't want auto-recognized.
Better yet, use the Exercise App to tell it exactly what you are doing and when you start and stop, and it will always get it right.

@Leo66 It could have been swimming, especially if you were washing your car under water. 😉 But seriously, the part of the Fitbit that measures movement (acceleration, actually) sensed a pattern that is similar to stroke swimming. Once, my Fitbit recorded a 20 minute bike ride while I was driving. I was on one of those stretches of road where there are prominent separations in sections of concrete. That rhythmic change got recorded as riding a bike.
