Versa tracking too many steps while not doing step-based activities

Okay, I just got my Versa the other day and I have been noticing that it pretty much counts my steps for anything. Like when I am cooking or brushing my teeth. How do I fix it? I have it on my right hand which is my dominant hand! Thanks in advance for any info. 🙂

Hello @Dechku89

All these device manufacturers ie:Fitbit, Apple are just trying to give you their best guesses and estimates on what you are doing.

Hope this helps.

Hey @Dechku89, welcome to the Community! Let me explain to you that wrist Fitbit trackers recognized some of the movement of your arms as steps, that is why you'll see that while doing activities such cooking or brushing your teeth, extra steps will be added. I suggest you to wear your Versa on your non dominant hand 'cause is the hand that you use less, so a shorter amount of steps will be tracked. In addition, I'd like you to take a look at the information in this help article: How does my Fitbit device calculate my daily activity?

I think it works personally better for me 🙂 However, on a road trip today because of the bouncy roads, it counted them as steps. Anyway to fix that?

Thanks for your reply @Dechku89! Yes, on bumpy roads or when you are driving too fast, your Versa will recognized those movements as steps. I recommend to download DriveBit, which is an application that will prevent this extra data to be tracked while driving.

Ok, drivebit may help, but how come this is a specific problem for the Versa ... my wife is on her second, but still has this problem... while the Ionic I have has no such problem recognising that driving is not the same as walking.  For a modern fitness tracker it seems to me that the Versa has a bug in its calculation method that is not seen in other trackers.  If anyone gets this problem I’d suggest return it and swap it for a different tracker model until Fitbit gets the message.  Hopefully there is a solution if Fitbit can adjust the calculation in the next software update.  Maybe using the drivebit app will help them do that?  If so, Fitbit needs to tell us and give a date for the update.

I’ve always used my Fitbit on my non-dominant wrist. I think that is says that in the instructions. I remember reading it years ago.

Hey @IanHB, it is great to see you around more often! Thanks for sharing your feedback in regards of the Versa and the steps tracker. Please keep in mind that Fitbit is always working in order their products and services and keep motivating people to reach their fitness goals. So don;t hesitate to ask or leave any other further comment you may have.

@MandySalas, welcome aboard! Wearing your Versa on your non dominant hand will help you out to get a more accurate amount of steps since that is the hand that you use less, there are not too many hand movements that will be recognized as steps. For further information about how Fitbit devices track your activity, please review this help article: How does my Fitbit device calculate my daily activity?

Have a nice day!

I am wearing it on my non-dominant hand. There is something wrong with the count. I got 24,000 steps in less than 20 minutes and I was NOT running.

Thanks for your reply @MandySalas! Wow! That is a huge amount of steps in less than 20 minutes. Let me suggest you something, please restart your Versa by following these instructions. Wear it for a few days and let me know if the issue persists.

My job requires alot of typing, I wear mine in the non dominate hand and it counts my typing as steps..  how to fix that?

Best Answer

Agreed - I just got a new Versa 2 and I'm also finding that it's logging typing as "steps". I've tried moving to my non-dominant hand to see whether that helps (I do most of my typing with my dominant hand), but it's still a problem - and one that I didn't experience with my previous Charge 2 device.

Is the DriveBit app no longer available.  My new Versa 2 counted 200+ steps today on my drive into work while yesterday it counted maybe 20.  Same route, same car, same everything.  This is getting a bit annoying and frustrating that a device that cost a lot of money doesn't function as expected and the typical answer is....  let me tell you how it counts steps or download another app or try this instead. Why can't fitbit just fix the problem reported by so many people on this device that apparently doesn't happen on other fitbit devices.  I know - I have an Alta HR and it doesn't count the extras like this newer, more expensive versa 2 does.  Sorry- just very disenchanted with a device I was looking forward to using for a long time.  At this rate, it may get returned as there seems to be more excuses than fixes for a known problem.
