on my verse when I pull down screen the the clock face instead of my notifications it says in red unlock with phone. not had this before how do I fix it?

That suggests that the fitbit has been locked due to an incorrect PIN being entered too many times. There are instructions for unlocking it via the app on the phone in this help file:
