The Surge has this super-fancy barometric altimeter, as well as GPS. This feature is only available on the most top-end navigation devices, yet we don't have access to elevation data. Let's see it!
Moderator Edit: Clarified subject and updated label
When selecting the "hike" exercise on my Ionic (or any Fitbit OS device), it would be nice to have access to some additonal stats on the screen. Currently there is not any advantage to selecting a hike versus a walk. Particularly the stats I would find valuable for a hike are; altitude difference from starting point, lowest altitude (relative to start point), highest altitude (relative to start point), and total change in altitude over the entire hike.
I can understand not wanting to display an absolute altitude due to poissble inaccuracies, which is why everything suggested is relative to the start point. Additionally the relative stats have more value anyway. I also expect comments such as "there are altitude apps available for Fitbit OS devices" but those do not solve the problem since the exercise app is being actively used to track the hike; hence why it is suggested to add it to the available stat list for the hike exercise.
Yes, I agree that some of the different exercise options should be more tailored to their respective components with more stats unique to the exercise itself!!
@frozenfire I agree that talorioring the stats per exercise would be beneficial across the board. If there are any specific ideas on the stats for different exercises, I would happily vote for them.
Hi i think a valid addition to the visible stat`s while running with GPS would be accumulative ascent (and maybe current altitude) after all I do believe the Ionic has an altimeter, and the information would be a boon to the many hill goers worldwide.

This has been a request for several years and FitBit refuses to respond or comply. It would be such a simple matter for them make this feature part of the devices but for some reason they will not. I am a runner and triathlete living in the mountains of NC and this information is vital to my training. That is why I have stopped using and buying their products. When they do get into the 21st century I will return to using their items. But it seems like I will not hold my breath. I suggest you do not as well.
@forestfine I am 100% with you! I am sorry I got the Ionic instead of taking a closer look at more expensive devices that would have this feature. I simply cannot understand why Fitbit doesn't make this happen.
Either FitBit does not read the feedback from its users or just does not care. Neither is acceptable for a reputable company. I have steered so many fellow runners and triathletes to other company's devices because of the lack of this feature.
@forestfine And then they moved my suggestion to be merged with this previous one where they mention using third party apps. Yet I explicitly stated in my suggestion why using a third party app does not meet the need. So futher proff that they don't listen.
Yes moderators I already read this thread before starting a new suggestion. That is why I created a new one that countered the suggestions you made. If these should be merged then maybe consider changing your official response to indicate that.
I have bought the Ionic in December and i really like the design and the app to go with the device but there is a crucial feaure missing for me: elevation data when I'm in Hiking mode. The Ionic does display flights of stairs but that is not very helpful for me, absolute elevation based on the GPS signal would be so much better. Based on the elevation I can judge the distance to the summit and my progress on the hike a lot better than with the data I get now.
Since the data is displayed in the web dashboard it is there, so please include it in the mobile app and the Ionic hiking mode to make this device a true competitor to the other outdoor activity trackers on the market.
You are wasting your time and energy asking Fitbit for this. If you have been following the threads, this has been an issue for several years and Fitbit refuses to comply or even respond to the requests. If you want that information - and believe me I want it badly for my training for athletic events - then purchase another device. They are not going to change their programs. And you are right, the information is there, all their programmers have to do it make it available in real time.
I understand that there is now a third party app, which is great!
However, the app cannot be accessed while in exercise mode. The app also does not track elevation gained or lost.
It would still be much more helpful if this feature was integrated into the exercise app so I could know how many feet I've ascended while biking or running. Most of my runs and bike rides are in the mountains of Colorado where I typically see 2500-5000 ft of elevation on training days and up to 10k of elevation gain on race days. I am also planning on completing some everest challenges and logging over 30k of elevation in 24hrs. Elevation is a more important parameter to me than distance traveled.
Many trail directions are denoted by elevation i.e. turn right at the fork at 10,576 ft and continue straight through the junction at 10,945. Exiting the exercise mode to check elevation creates disjointed workouts in strava and on the fitbit dashboard.
I would like to see the elevation gained and lost, and the current elevation integrated into the exercise app.
After a running or walk activity, I would like to see below the heart rate graph, the elevation graph and the pace of the activity. It is useful to see all these values on one screen. I previously owned a Garmin and I miss that feature.
I wonder with that...then that could explain the heightened amount of stair counts we get after our walk/run activities because it’s always after I walk, my stair count is up at a ridiculous number with absolutely no stair walking. At least with that, we can see the elevation we are at and see why the Fitbit assumes we climbed that many stairs.
I have waded through this topic to see if it was yet worth buying Ionic or whatever. The essential point, which doesn't seem to have been made, is that many of us would like to have access to 2 height-type values: height above sea level (preferably with an option to display in metres or feet) and height gained during the day or during a specific exercise. To get the height, because we don't believe the GPS where altitude is concerned, we would have to have a means of calibrating against a known height which requires an ability to input a height into the watch from the map or whatever, when we're at that point. I think Fitbit are protecting people from making mistakes because they don't understand about height v pressure- however, a lot of us do. We already get, using the pressure sensor, the height gained so there's not all that much work to do. However, they haven't done it yet, so the Ionic is not yet the device to buy for those of us who want a useful altimeter as well.
For the trackers having measurement of altitude: Add a real altimetric follow. Instead of indicating the number of stairs during one day, please indicate the positive and negative changes of altitude in meters or feet during a day. For a record of a sport (running, trial, aso) please add a graphical display of the change of altitude against distance run.
This kind of following is important for runners, bicycle, and trekking adepts. The positive and also the negative changes of altitude is a valuable description for a lot of sports, more than the positive changes in stages as it is indicate now into the apps. It seems also easy to implement.
I just purchased a Fitbit Ionic, and am noticing that elevation gain is not a statistic included with the Run exercise. Could a software update be provided in the future to include this? Elevation gain is an extremely important statistic for users that run, hike, or cycle, and should be listed with all the other stats of a user's exercise on the app. And it could also be factored in with calories burned, as going uphill definitely burns more calories than running/hiking/cycling on level terrain.
I bought a Versa 2 because I was told it had the ability to measure elevation, but I don't find it anywhere on my watch ord on the app. I do see a floor count on mt watch but that includes all climbing, but not a total count to the highest elevation. Please Fitbit, add elevation in your next update. Thank you!
