Track Macros in App (daily carbs/protein/fat intake)

The browser log shows a breakdown of your macros for the day, and this is extremely useful, but it is absent in the app. For many people, including myself, it's not only important to track your calorie intake for the day, but also your macronutrient intake (carbohydrates, protein, and fat). When I'm considering my next meal or planning my food for the day, I want to know how much of each macronutrient I have eaten so far, so I don't go overboard. As a busy individual, most of my food logging is done through the app. However, I can not track my macronutrients through the app, which makes it hard for me to regulate my intake.

Here is an example of the "daily totals" macro tracker on the Fitbit browser log:

macros.png

Extremely helpful. Not only does it show how many grams of each macro I've consumed for the day, but it also shows the percentage of my daily consumption for each macro. The aforementioned is a fabulous feature because I split my daily macro targets into percentages (ie; 30% carbs, 35% fat, 35% protein). This allows to see me where I'm at so far, or even log everything I INTEND to eat and see where that would leave me. Then, I can make adjustments. Really a great feature.

But, again, it's not available on the app. And I think it's really important that this be added, for several reasons:

  • A lot of people log most of their food through the day via app because of time restrictions/lack of access to a computer.
  • Real time macronutrient tracking helps everyone to meet their goals and adjust planned meals based on where their macronutrients currently stand.
  • Macronutrient tracking is just as important as calorie tracking. We need a balance of macronutrients to be happy and healthy.
  • Easily accessible (app) macronutrient tracking will help people to see patterns in their diet which are causing them to fall short of what they need, therefore helping them improve their diet.
  • Diet and what you eat is just as important as how many calories you consume. Being able to see the macronutrient numbers alongside the calorie numbers will help people become more aware of their diet.

Please give us macronutrient tracking in the app! It's such a wonderful feature of the browser log, and should definitely be prioritized for including it in the app log. Fitbit is an amazing product and can really help people turn their lifestyles around for the better, and adding the macronutrient tracker to the app will only further help those who need direction in the area of diet.

The detailed nutritional information including vitamins and minerals has never been visible in the app or on the website.  I suggest that Fitbit simply total these values each day since they are specified in the individual foods and display them on the same graph as the US RDAs for each nutrient.  I also suggest that users should be able to display trends in both macro and micro nutrients over time.

If not, why bother entering vitamin/mineral info at all - either in multiple redundant food entries for the same foods, or in new or custom user-entered foods and/or meals?  It's quite a bit of trouble to calculate and enter vitamins and minerals for homemade soup (for instance) and the information entered never comes out again.

Many diets today track macros & net carbs along with calories, would be good if these tracked against goals like calories do in the app. I now have to use several apps to make this work, which is time consuming.

That would be great. I'm glad that I am able to at least go to the
fitbit.com website where I stay logged on and view my macro nutrients. It
would make things a lot easier to have that worked into the app. I've
gotten used to going back and forth between the app and website several
times a day now so it is now not so inconvenient.

Hey, thats what I am searching for! Please add the nutrition overview to the mobile app.

I would also like to see Magnesium and Potassium macronutrients available to track as I tend to be low in Magnesium and it's one of the most important minerals a body needs.  Please consider adding these as well!

Fitbit, i thought you were serious. I just got my Charge going and started inputing food. I need to see my macros so, but it turns out you don't give me that info? I think it's preposterous to suggest syncing with a third party app. You are fitbit! Please add this feature, as you can see people are clamoring for it. Also, serious athletes will not consider your product this way.

You can get your macro’s, but you will have to log on to your dashboard through the Fitbit website, not your app. Go to your food log and click on the see more button at the bottom right corner. I know that it is frustrating having to do it this way, but at least you are able to view your up dated macro nutrients at anytime. I visit it several times a day. Hope that helps. Maybe soon it will get added into the app.

I consider myself a serious athlete (marathon in 2 weeks, play soccer 3-4x/week) and have specific requirements for myself in terms of grams of protein and carbs each day. It's really not at all difficult to open the browser, bookmark the food-logging page, and see the macros that way.

It would be NICE to have it all intergrated in one place, but let's not over-react. The information most people need is available.

That is exactly what I have been trying to explain. Thanks for making it
simple.

Are you serious? Most people do need the macros and not only the kcal. Or do you think its fine if you eat the whole day some mc donalds fastfood if it fits your calorie intake?

The macro breakdown is a must have feature and the workaround with the website is impracticable - we are not living in 2003, thinks should be as easy, nice and fast as possible. That should be obvious for a great company like fitbit.

I check mine about 3-4 times everyday. Looking at your macros is easy as
has already been explained several times.

Going on the site is fine and dandy, and I know things can take a while to tweak, but if they have the info available, go ahead and make it available on the app. I't's OK if you think i'm overreacting, maybe I'm sounding too passionate about this, but I believe I have the right to feel about it the way I feel. I can curb myself, and I can adjust and use the site, but no one can say that this feature isn't a must. 1. calories in vs calories out isn't a healthy view of calories and nutrition. 2. You need to track macros for nutrition, fat loss, performace, muscle gain, so any tracker device/app needs to include this feature. 3. Go use a third party app and sync? seriously?

Anyway, yes, I know, the feature is on the site, I'm glad to know. Thank you guys for letting me know. I'm just pointing out a huge oversight.

I'll use MFP on the side until the day the macro tracking is available on the fitbit app.

Maybe some of the comments that I am getting are not actually meant to get
sent to me. I agree with you 100% on everything that you just said.

Not everyone is sitting at a desk all day or hauling around a laptop.  Macros need to be on the app.

Agreed, but you don't need a laptop either. I just use my phone to view
the macronutrients everytime.

Hi all,

Coding the functionalities in the mobile app is not complicated: the algorithm already exists as shown on web.  The problem here is just having the right priorities for the development team.

I wonder: is the "social" part of Fitbit mobile app used by many of us ?  Do you use the trophees and the friends challenges ?  Do we - as Fitbit users - prefer to see the Fitbit direction give more priorities on social or on macros ?

I just tried the Up application, which is beautiful and have those macros.

Fitbit is easier for introducing meals, but Up is a good example of simple layout for macros values.  Just saying "try fitbit for calories burn and MyFitnessPal for calories in" is just not an acceptable answer for the leader of wearable calories counter.  Take a look at the concurrent...

Fitbit is now on the Nasdaq and disposes of - I assume, correct me if i am wrong - enough cash to have a large development team.  If a great part of Fitbit users ask for macros on mobile app, it may be a good choice to assign some developers on this point.

The Fitbit web site is not one of the nicest....  It is absolutely not mobile compliant, and surely not iOS compliant due to Flash component.   Asking us to navigate to fitbit.com on our phone may be not the right answer.

Finally Fitbit gives us a community newsgroup, and we give in return time to encode and document our complaints, our ideas and our wishes.  It would be nice to have some tips from fitbit about this point.  Will it become reality, and when, or do we have to just accept the mobile app as is ?

Thx all for participating to this thread.

H.

What hanske1967 said. And to answer his question, I don't care for the social component, nor do I think it should be prioritized over the health component.
I went on the site with my iPhone a little while ago and rolled my eyes when I got there. It's not a mobile site. On the computer, flash looks pretty, but it doesn't make it better or easier to work with. I'm a Systems Admin, I spend all day looking at consoles, dashboards, and logs. The fitbit dashboard could stand a redesign to make it more functional.

In any case... I'm putting this matter on the shelf for now and I'm gonna hope fitbit gets to it soon.

Please please please add a protein tracking tile on the fitbit app.  The app does a good job at most other things this would really be an enhancement.

@putiri @Taniwiel @kstoneman I'd also recommend up-voting and commenting on this feature request for macronutrients in the Fitbit App.

I would also like to be able to track my carb intake.  Right now, I carry around a small notebook.  It would be so much easier to be able to log carbs in.

I ended up switching my food tracking to MyFitnessPal. Even paid for the upgrade so I could get macro view of carbs, fat and protein. It even re-calculates when you change the serving sizes. The program syncs with Fitbit which makes it convenient.

1/4 if the population has diabetes and a carb tracker would be really useful. I've had to track all of my food in another app. I would really like to only use the fitbit app.

Stepping Up

Hi:  Please help us...........we need to be able to track our macronutrients on our mobile app.  If cost is a factor (which is what usually governs decisions of this type) I and I'm sure others would be willing to pay a fee to upgrade to the better app.

Thank you
