Track Macros in App (daily carbs/protein/fat intake)

The browser log shows a breakdown of your macros for the day, and this is extremely useful, but it is absent in the app. For many people, including myself, it's not only important to track your calorie intake for the day, but also your macronutrient intake (carbohydrates, protein, and fat). When I'm considering my next meal or planning my food for the day, I want to know how much of each macronutrient I have eaten so far, so I don't go overboard. As a busy individual, most of my food logging is done through the app. However, I can not track my macronutrients through the app, which makes it hard for me to regulate my intake.

Here is an example of the "daily totals" macro tracker on the Fitbit browser log:

macros.png

Extremely helpful. Not only does it show how many grams of each macro I've consumed for the day, but it also shows the percentage of my daily consumption for each macro. The aforementioned is a fabulous feature because I split my daily macro targets into percentages (ie; 30% carbs, 35% fat, 35% protein). This allows to see me where I'm at so far, or even log everything I INTEND to eat and see where that would leave me. Then, I can make adjustments. Really a great feature.

But, again, it's not available on the app. And I think it's really important that this be added, for several reasons:

  • A lot of people log most of their food through the day via app because of time restrictions/lack of access to a computer.
  • Real time macronutrient tracking helps everyone to meet their goals and adjust planned meals based on where their macronutrients currently stand.
  • Macronutrient tracking is just as important as calorie tracking. We need a balance of macronutrients to be happy and healthy.
  • Easily accessible (app) macronutrient tracking will help people to see patterns in their diet which are causing them to fall short of what they need, therefore helping them improve their diet.
  • Diet and what you eat is just as important as how many calories you consume. Being able to see the macronutrient numbers alongside the calorie numbers will help people become more aware of their diet.

Please give us macronutrient tracking in the app! It's such a wonderful feature of the browser log, and should definitely be prioritized for including it in the app log. Fitbit is an amazing product and can really help people turn their lifestyles around for the better, and adding the macronutrient tracker to the app will only further help those who need direction in the area of diet.

I would like to see my total nutritional values. Example total fat, sugar, sodium etc.

I've had my my Fitbit for a little less than 24 hours.  I came to the device looking for activity tracking and heart rate monitoring but my goodness the app adds so much more!  I was really surprised to find that Fitbit basically put all of the functionality of "myfitnesspal" right inside their app.  And it's great!

So here's my ask for the future - go farther with that idea.  Look at websites like "eatthismuch.com" - it's not enough to tell me how many calories I'm eating but am I eating the right mix of calories?  Is my diet deficient in some significant nutrient and can you suggest a food that would help fill in that gap?

That's the next big step in nutrition tracking.

I love what I see so far!

Still no macro nutrient breakdown within the mobile app is really disappointing, as it is a vital aspect for using the app and logging my food.  It is on the online dashboard but not within the app, surely a simple addition to make!?

I was rereading some of the comments on this subject and I wanted to add my comment regarding the social aspect of Fitbit's program......  Don't need it, don't want it. !!!  Not to be insulting but I feel the collecting of badges and challenging friends to compete, somewhat juvenile or high schoolish.  I'd much rather concentrate of being healthy and keeping fit, which involves keeping track of the maco nutrients.  There was also a suggestion of using a 3rd party app to acheive this ability, however I was put off by the considerable yearly fee they wanted to charge to link to Fitbit.  I don't believe it was a viable or intelligent solution.

Hi all,

I'm new to Fitbit and pretty much love everything about the Surge and Aria scale I just purchased. My only complaint thus far is the inability to see a daily nutrition summary of everything I've consumed. I know you can see the nutritional info of each food item you eat, but I need to see daily totals for the usual stuff: proteins, carbs, sodium, fat, etc...

I hope Fitbit can incorporate this into the next update as the other fitness trackers do this, and Fitbit should be leading the industry here...

Please enhance this feature!

Adam.

I love that you can track your food and see how many calories you have left to consume that day; however, it would be nice if it kept track of not only calories but protein, carbs, sugar, and fats as well to help you reach your goals even better.

It doesn't matter which carbs you put into the counter; all that matters is the amount of carbs consumed.  You could eat the worst 20 carbs per day on the planet and still lose so much weight.  It's up to you to choose the carbs you want to eat.  Getting healthier carbs (ie:  mostly green veg) into your diet means more food you get to eat.  🙂

I think it would add value to the app/dashboard if you could view your intake as more than just a calorie count. There are plenty of other apps that you can log food and it shows it to you in macro groups, sometimes even in pie charts. This would definitely be a beneficial addition and I'm sure it would be a welcome update

Yes, please please PLEASE include a CARB COUNTER! And a RECIPE BUILDER to calculate nutrition of customized foods. I have lupus and take prednisone and have had to watch my carbs. Essentially, I eat like a diabetic, doing a keto diet. But for now, I have to use TWO separate apps, Fitbit and Carb Manager (and sometimes a THIRD, called Recipe Builder) to keep track of all that I am eating. And let me tell you, it's a BIG PAIN to do enter in everything I eat twice. It is so time consuming and not at all streamline. I would rather be exercising than spending all my time logging in things twice per meal!!! PS- I have lost 20lbs in 2 months since I got the Fitbit! It has been a great aid to me! I love it and a CARB COUNTER and RECIPE BUILDER would make Fitbit even MORE AWESOME! Think of all the diabetics and auto-immune sufferers who could REALLY use it as a tool!!!!

Yes yes yes! Please add a Carb Tracker!!! I have to use another existing app to track carbs outside of Fitbit and it is a pain. I don't want to have to get MyFitnessPal. I want it all in one place. Takes forever to log it in. I have to watch my carb intake to keep my blood sugar under control with predisone for lupus.

Absolutely agree!  This information is available on the fitibit.com dashboard, and would love to see it in the app as well.  This is one of the main reasons I am still using MyFitnessPal to log my calorie intake.

In the myfitnesspal app, after you log all your food it shows you a summary of your macros. So it'll show you In grams how much protein, carbs and fat you consumed that day. I would love if fitbit had this option on their app so I don't even have to use myfitnesspal.

Tracking calories is awesome and very helpful, but I would also love to see a way to track the carbohydrates that I am eating.

I would like to be able to track the number of grams for carbs, (fiber, sugar), fat (saturated, unsaturated), and protein. I would like to track my goals of each, similar to myfitnesspal...Tracking calories alone is not sufficient for a healthy diet...

I saw that this idea was mentioned a few months ago, but felt a need to post it again.

I have a FitBit One and LOVE it!!  There is a feature I would love to see incorporated into the iPhone app, though.  I keep track of my calories, fat, protein, and carbs.  Currently, I can see where I am on each on my computer, but cannot see the total on my iPhone (I only see total calories).  It would be quite helpful to be able to see these totals on the phone, as I do not always have access to my computer, but always have my phone with me.

Right now, if I want to figure out where I am on fat, I have to manually add all fat totals together, AND remember that what I'm seeing in the nutrition view is Per Serving - NOT the total for what I am eating - so I also need to know what a serving size is (ie: an 8 oz filet shows 7g fat, but a serving is 3 oz, so the total fat is 18.7 for an 8 oz filet).

Hoping to see this feature added soon Smiley Happy  Thank you!

Thank you for your contribution @mlbmlw! Well, if you are referring to being able to manually add your carbs, this could be a great addition to the Food Log. For now, what you can do is log your food and keep count of your daily totals, which includes your carb count. Click here to see the example.

Any other ideas or requests you  might have, feel free to share them or vote for them in case they have already been posted in this board. Thanks!

Hello!

I use my fitbit surge daily to track my workouts and steps. I currently use my fitness pal to track my food intake - mostly due to the fact that I track my macros rather than just simply calories - i have specific Protein, Fat, Carb and Fiber gram goals I need to hit each day to get the proper nutrition I need for performance and my health. I would much rather track through fitbit but currently the app does not allow for setting macro nutrient goals - while it does show them as i track through MFP of what i consumed it doesnt show how many i have left to reach my daily goals.

I would love it if the app had a way to input specific macronutrient goals for people who count macros, and if that was implemented it would be amazing if it could also be customized by "training days" and "rest days" on training days I eat more and my macros are different than non training days or rest days. Please add this feature! then i would solely use your app for all my food and exercise tracking needs - rather than jumping back and forth to My Fitness Pal and Fitbit.

Thank you!

Would it be possible to have a carbohydrate counter in addition to the calorie counter?

I agree with the orginial post, there should be a way to switch the counter from Calorie counting to Carb counting.  The information is there so this feature should be easy.

thanks

Hello,

I would like to continue the request that a "Sugar Alcohol" count be added to the Custom Food entry under Carbohydrates. Those of us on a low-carb program, pay attention to Fiber and Sugar Alcohols when counting carbs. It would awesome to have the ability to do so, so we can have the "net carb" count for a food item.

Example: 20g Carbs - 10g Fiber - 8g Sugar Alcohols = 2 Net Carbs.

Right now in the app it would show it being 10 Net Carbs when we would do the math.

This is a HUGE thing for those of us that do this type of eating program. 🙂

Thank you,

~Raith

I know this was already listed...but I wanted to make sure it was listed again for ease of reading. 🙂

Not only in the app, but the dashboard.  While the individual foods are logged with a great deal of detail, the summary DOES NOT HAVE that detail.  I want to track things other than fat and calories. So, if the informaiton is available, and I've taken the extra time to add it, I would  like to see it in the summary!!

All of the information on protein and stuff is already in the nutrition facts there, i just think it would be great to have the totals added up so that i could see if im getting enough protein/ vitamins just quickly glancing at the app instead of going in and adding up everything that i ate manually.

I agree with everyone here.  I would love to be able to see the daily nutritional information without having to log onto the site.  Doesn't seem like it would be that difficult to add to the app.
