Sense doesn't track sleep correctly

Replies are disabled for this topic. Start a new one or visit our Help Center.

My wrist measures only 5.75 inches in circumference.  I suspect that is why the SENSE doesn't track my sleep well.  I have turned it to the inside of my wrist but that didn't help much.  In the standard configuration, I tend to get two separate sleep cycles instead of one.  Or I go to bed at 10 pm and the SENSE says I didn't go to bed until 4:30 am.  Any suggestions?

Hi @sdallen. Welcome! It's great to see a new face around.

Thanks for sharing detailed information about your Sense and I'm sorry you're not receiving your sleep details correctly. As you may know, there are some factors that may prevent you from receiving sleep stages which will also affect your sleep scores and EOV value. For this reason, I'd recommend to check the following:

  • If you slept in a position that prevented your device from getting a consistent heart-rate reading or wore it too loosely.
  • If you used the Begin Sleep Now option in the Fitbit app instead of just wearing your tracker to bed.
  • If you slept for less than 3 hours.
  • If your device’s battery is critically low.

That being said, I'd recommend to restart your watch, wear your watch higher on your wrist (about 2-3 finger widths above your wrist bone) and try using it on your other wrist in the next night. Once you're awake, make sure to sync so you can check your details.

Keep me posted.

Edit your sleep log to reflect the times you *actuslly* went to sleep! It’s easy and it will learn with more time. 🙂

Editing the log to adjust start and stop time for sleep doesn't always work, sometimes doing so and you lose sleep stage data. Mine has been fairly accurate but a few times in the past week it said i went to bed 2 hours later then i did so it shortchanged me on sleep. I adjusted the log and lost sleep stage data.

Thanks but that didn't work for me.  I cannot edit the sleep log in the app.  It informs me "there is already a sleep log for this date" - paraphrased.- and won't take any changes.  I have checked all the settings and don't see anything that  would allow editing of prior sleep logs.

I have tried Start Sleep Now.  It worked once but not the next time.

Is it better to wear my Sense on outside or inside of wrist?  I have very small wrists.  Already wearing it two fingers above wrist bone.

I have tried all of these things - positioning the Sense 3 fingers above my wrist bone, not using sleep start/stop, upping the sensitivity to Sensitive, restarting my Fitbit several times, keeping my Sense battery charged - and am still getting split or truncated sleep.  I normally got to bed about 10 pm and to sleep 30-40 min later.  No difficulty falling asleep, contrary to what the Sense is telling me.  I had no difficulty using the Garmin Forerunner 35.  It tracked my sleep reasonably accurately but, obviously with not as much detail.  Every night the Sense either conks out for an hour or two in the middle of the night  - not when I get up to go the bathroom - or has me going to bed at 2:30 am.  I have now had the Sense since 26 Sep 2020 and it has not tracked my sleep correctly any night!!

I hope that there is a software update in the near future or I will have to return this device.

I'd be surprised if it works inside the wrist - all your ligaments are there .. wouldn't they interfere with the sensor reading from veins, etc. that are just under your skin on the outside of the wrist?

I too suffer from the same problem but none of your potential causes apply to me. You see I have 2 Fitbits: Sense snd Charge 2.  Charge 2 detects even half an hour nap.  Sense is totally blind for naps.  If I wake up for bathroom at night and then go back to sleep, that's it.  The first half of my sleep is recorded but not the second half.  Fitbit needs to acknowledge that they have a faulty sensor or software.

If I am going to do that, why do I need a Fitbit?  A pencil and paper will do the job.

My Sense regularly stops in the middle of the night for about an hour or two.  According to Sense, I hardly ever get 8 hours of sleep.  Sometimes I can correlate with getting up to go to the bathroom but not always.   My Garmin HR+ tracked sleep pretty accurately but it didn't have REM sleep sensing and all the other stuff that is new to Sense.  Note that my Sense occasionally tracks naps but they have to be an hour or more long.

I agree that Fitbit needs to fix this.  I have gotten nothing from Fitbit help except things I have already tried that didn't work.  Tone deaf customer support.  Latest update did nothing but shorten battery life significantly.

Recent data:  2320 go to sleep to 0230 (2 hrs 58 min) then 0440 to 0754 (2 hrs 52 min).  It completely missed 2 hrs and 10 min.

I've been doing that, my Sense does not seem to be a very fast learner. 🤔

My Versa did an excellent job of capturing my entire night's sleep. Sometimes I wake up around 3 a.m. and read for a bit and then fall back to sleep. The Versa would capture that, not the Sense. As far as it's concerned I got 5 hours sleep for the night. Very frustrating!

I agree. Similar things happen to me with Sense. Frequently will lose an hour or more if my sleep is interrupted for 10 min.

Running into the same problem! My husband and I both had fitbit charge 2 for years. They were both very accurate, even detecting naps and distinguishing them from hours spent reading etc. We both just shelled out some serious $$ for the fitbit sense excited about all the new features only to be disappointed. Hubby snores from 11 pm to 6 am and isn't getting "credit" for sleeping until sometimes as late as 2:30 am. So frustrating. None of the trouble shooting ideas have done a thing to help. Guess I should have waited for fitbit to iron out some kinks in the new model? Not ok
