Sense opens notifications on phone, not on watch

Hi there,

Just got a Fitbit Sense this week. Everything works well except when I get a text message notification. When I look at the notification on my watch it won't let me open it to read it. It only shows a symbol of a phone with an arrow and says open. If I tap on it, it opens the message on my phone.  How can I get it to open the message on the watch?

A few things - I've had multiple Fitbit watches and have known how to set this up with my settings and permissions with out any issues.

- I have tried a number of suggestions on this site including a 4 step process of turning off the notifications, un pairing the watch, force stopping the app and restarting my phone. This did not work.

- I can read emails and whatsapp messages just fine.

- Fitbit app is up to date

- I've tried both with my phone locked and inactive as well as on while using it. No difference either way

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you

Hi @sourpink if you are referring to a text message. Tapping the message usually opens enough of the message to know what it is about, the first 40 characters, tapping open is telling Fitbit to open the message up on the phone.

With not knowing the type of phone I can suggest looking here. They have tips for android and iOS users.

Hi,

Yes, in theory tapping on the text should allow me to read the partial message. Unfortunately that is not the case and tapping on it does nothing at all, which is the problem.

The only "tappable" item on the watch is the open to phone or dismiss.

I am currently using a Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus.

Thank you for your reply I appreciate you trying to help!

Same problem here, I have the Sense and a Samsung S 10. When I attempt to open the text message to reply, it clears it from the Fitbit Sense, but opens it on my phone.

My father has the Sense, and a Samsung S 9, his works properly--  opening the message, allowing for a quick reply or a voice to text response.

I spent time with Tech support and was unsuccessful in resolving the issue.

Yup! I have a friend with the sense and a Samsung galaxy 10 and she has no issues. I too have been on with tech support who have done nothing to help. I got an email eventually telling me 24 to 48 hours for an update... on day 4 after getting that email I sent one back asking what was going on and received another 24 to 48 hours wait email. I will be returning if I don't hear from them this week.

Tap the notification notice once. The first part of the message will open on the tracker. This, for me is usually enough to figure out the subject.

If more info is needed, tap open to open the notification on the phone.

Hi! Mine does not do that. When a notification pops up, it will say NEW MESSAGE. Then when I click on it, it will show a 'blue phone icon with a small arrow on the side'. Once I click that, the notification disappears and the message will open on my phone  The SENSE gives no other option except to cancel the message. We tested several times last night and kept getting the same result. I uninstalled and reinstalled the app, cleared cache... what else can I do? Thanks!

Did anyone get this resolved, I have a Samsung S10+ and the Fitbit Sense, it does not display the first 40 characters when you press the new message. It just gives an option to Open, which opens it on the phone, does not display the first 40 characters. Worked fine on my Charge 3, but not on the Sense.

When the notification comes through, you should be able to tap this notification to open the beginning of the message on the watch.

Tap open to open the complete message on the phone. This is how it works for me.

Rich,

We all know what it should do. That is it should show the first 40 characters when the message comes through, BUT IT IS NOT!

  • I have found the solution to this issue in another post. If you read all the issues that were reported in this thread, there seems to be a common theme. That is people using Samsung phones, and now not seeing the message text on there Fitbit watch. When I did more digging, I found it has to do whit a setting on our Samsung phones that has to do with message previews. If this is disabled, the first 40 characters will not be displayed on the Fitbit, in my case the Sense. I previously had the Charge 3 with the same phone, and it worked. So I'm not sure if the setting was changed, or that it is a combination of the Sense and my Samsung Galaxy 10+. In either case, it is now solved after making that change and now the first 40 characters are displaying.
  • To fix the issue, you have to do the following: go into Messages App, then hit the menu icon and select settings, then select Notifications, then select In-app notification settings, and then make sure Preview new messages is set on.

Thank you so much for posting this.  I have a Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ and was having this same issue.  I completely agree that this *shouldn't be the ultimate fix, but it at least allows me to see the message preview on my Sense.  Thank you!!

My post was in answer to the OP asking why when they tap open on the watch, the message opens up on the phone. It does this because fitbit designed it to work this way.
