Why cant i get my text messages on my watch expensive watch just to track steps regret buying it and now i cant exchange it smh

You can get text messages, if your watch is syncing with the Fitbit App ?

In the phone Fitbit App

Click on profile photo [top left]

Device photo [middle left]

Notifications

And verify the top 4 items are correctly defined.

Also

App notifications

and select any apps you want to hear from.

Hi @Mjpratts - your phone is compatible, as long as the iOS is updated to 12.2 or higher.  You can check here for specific trouble shooting tips for iPhone users, including which iPhone setting you need to check.
