If you can't charge it after cleaning the contacts, contact support. They will send you a new one if it's still under warranty. (It takes a long time though.)

Its going to be difficult ... it was bought as a Xmas present in UK ... I am currently working in dubai and due to go home for vacation next month ... I might have to buy one even tho its only 4months since purchase...

They are cheap to buy. Less than $10
Personally, I’d just buy one and move on as opposed to dealing with customer support right now. Sounds like you do not have time to deal with Fitbit Support at the moment. Your call. Good Luck either way. Figuring out the problem was the cord is 95% of the solution.
