Trying to set up my new Fitbit Surge. Plugged Dongle into computer USB port but the installer program says no Dongle detected. Am I doing something wrong or is the Dongle defective?

What computer - Windows or Apple?
With my Windows, I remove the dongle, then restart the computer and then reinstall the dongle. It generally recognizes it then. I'm using Windows 8.1

@Odyssey13 has the right idea, USB devices where never ment to be plugged in until after the operating system is up and running.
Another thought is that with some older computers the dongle will only work in one usb port.

I know Fitbit is having some issues with the dongle's and synching using a computer. Maybe that is why it's not working. A fix is supposed to be coming sometime this week though if that is the cause of the problem.
