Not really a problem, since while on a bicycle a typical person does not step. Lets look at where the Surge is mounted, since it is on the wrist and the hand is on the handlebar, the Surge will be able to count the bumps in the road, that make the worst move up and down.

The Surge is designed to track miles and calories while cycling.

I have a “Fitbit One” when clipped inside my sock it will count one step for every 360 degree revolution, one step requires less effort than one revolution but at least you will get some credit.

I tried logging in a number of steps per cycling mile but fitbit will not allow logged steps to count on friends list or leader boards; lots of fitbit users have fought with them about the way it works but they uncaring.

Fitbit is looking at calories burnt when looking at non-step based exercises such as cycling, rowing, swimming, etc. While on a bicycle your feet are not walking and the data will not be correct, your stride is now based on what gear the bicycle is in.

Yes i do understand that it would be nice to recieve some credit towards challanges, with the Surge however putting the unit on the leg or pocket the HR will be lost. So it is now a decision as to which data is more important to the user.
