There is no way to adjust it. But several suggestions have been made already in the features forum.
Please go vote for the ones you want. Hopefully they will improve on it

Agree the new Charge 2 and Blaze screens are huge technological leaps @Blobster, Surge was designed for max info with the absolute longest possible battery life so the screen is neither color or very bright. What angle you view at is important too, experiment with glancing at a bit more of an angle rather than straight on - Surge is a powerful fitness tool; but no brightness adjust.

I just read the instructions and it does state there is a brightness adjustment.

Mine is very dim and support have advised me to put backlight on which I have done, and no real difference, and have now told me to adjust the brightness, but there is no brightness setting so think they are mis informing me. Mine looks nothing like the surge in the photos on their website or the adverts... that is clearly falsely advertising the product. I bought the surge as wanted to upgrade as I was so impressed with my charge2. I have bought 3 charge 2's for family and now a surge so own 4 fitbits but disappointed with the surge.

This is hardly a solved issue!
I just unpacked my Surge - many years of using Charge - decided to upgrade. My screen was very dim after syncing etc, so looked for a brightness control - seemed the logical thing to do. But now I am reading that this is a 'known issue' !! What does that mean????
The display is virtually unreadable - with or without backlight - and to read about 'workarounds' really begs the question. How could this basic issue of readability have been overlooked!?
I'll be returning mine tomorrow. This is very disappointing for a company that is supposed to be the leader in this field

The fit but surge has a sleep mode which dims the display and sometimes gets turned on accidently. You can reach it by clicking several times and looking for sleep mode.
