Versa 4 not working after update

allowed a firmware update yesterday and ever since my v4 physical button stopped working.  tried reboot, fully charging, and a factory reset - which has now left it inoperable as it will not sync to my app (just keeps looping back to the initial language selection screen).  any suggestions?? 🙏

Hi @DaveyBoi. A warm welcome to the forums.

Thank you for taking the time to share this information with me regarding your Versa 4 and for trying to fix it on your own.

Please, try to set up the smartwatch as a new device following the steps listed here below:

How do I set up my Fitbit device?

Best Answer

yes I finally was able to get it connected to the app again yesterday, but it still just restarts randomly several times per hour and comes up with a red X for 3-4 minutes.  the physical button still does not respond.  any other ideas?

Thanks for responding @DaveyBoi

Thank you for letting me know this new information.

Could you please rinse your device with soap-free water to ensure that no debris is obstructing the button's movement? Please follow these suggestions in this help article: How do I clean my Fitbit device?

In addition, try to perform the following troubleshooting steps:

1. Sync the device in the Fitbit app.

  • From the Today tab in the Fitbit app, tap Devices.
  • Chooose the Sense 2.
  • Tap Sync Now.

2. Check for available Firmware updates.

  • With the Fitbit device nearby, open the Fitbit app (make sure the Fitbit device is charged).
  • Tap the Today Tab > Devices > your device.
  • Tap Update (This option only appears if an update is available).

Follow the on-screen instructions: Keep the Fitbit device close to your phone during the update. When the update starts, a progress bar appears on the device and in the Fitbit app until the update is complete.

3. Charge the device:

  • Double-check the connection: Ensure secure connection to the charging cable and that the cable is plugged into a working USB port (computer or UL-certified wall charger).

If these steps don't work:

4. Restart the device: Keep in mind that your data won't be deleted: How do I restart my Fitbit device?

5. Changing the clock face via the Fitbit app can sometimes resolve a black screen issue:

  • Open the Fitbit app.
  • Choose Device Settings.
  • Navigate to the clock face options and try selecting a different clock face.

Exactly my problem and why I am searching here. I did all the steps and then also rebooting the phone also, which I read to do after the first install. I also reinstalled more times than this. Amongst those times, trying to alter the variables, I once did all the phone and contact and Alexa agree and continue and next toggles. In there, when I got the furthest, I installed - actually reinstalled a lost app into gallery - the gps maps app.Lost that after another install and now I don't see the option. I have seen the clock face and tried the standard install (or re-install). It shows up and disappears and is a timezones off. I had the settings working a moment and tried fixing there when selecting display options.

I am holding out one more fix when I get a new Android and updated on Android in October.

@ManuFitbit

This "fitbit setup" that you linked doesn't apply to the Versa 4 setup.

I had similar issues after an update and used the menu settings to shut down the Versa 4.

After I turned the Versa 4 back on it strangely asked me to choose a language almost like it did a factory reset, but the problem is that after I selected my language, the screen changes to a screen that won't do anything except to go back to the language selection when swiping right.

Back to the second screen of the Versa 4, that second screen says the following;

"To get started, download Fitbit app yo phone (large FitBit symbol) Learn more (there's an 'upward arrow' under the 'learn more')"

scrolling down it says; "Get fitbit app (small picture of a phone with the fitbit symbol on it) Visit app store on phone to download fitbit app"

scrolling down again it says; "Sign up or login (large picture of a paper & pen) Create a fitbit account to setup this device"

scrolling down again it says; “How to add a device I’m new to fitbit (large + sign symbol) After creating a fitbit account select this device”

scrolling down again it says; “I already have a fitbit account (large picture of possibly a person in a circle?) Log into fitbit app > Profile page > set up a device”

scrolling down again it says; “We’re here to help visit www.fitbit.com/setup Activation date: XXXX-XX-XX

I've had and have been using this Versa 4 for close to 2 years (according to its "setup date" on that second screen) and I've never had any kind of issues like this whenever I restarted or shut down the versa 4. I have the fitbit app on my phone and the versa 4 shows up on my device. There's an exclamation point notification stating "! Sync your device" and the battery meter for the versa 4 in the app says "no info". If I try syncing the Versa 4 I get a popup in the app stating "Fitbit couldn't sync your data try again". Under the picture of the device on the device (Versa 4) page next to the Bluetooth symbol it says "connected", Battery symbol "unknown", "! Synced 20 days ago. Sync your device"

The versa 4 apparently won’t connect/sync anymore with my Android phone.

The app still syncs with my phone in the Fitbit app.

Whenever I try syncing the app on my Android phone to the Vera 4 that is in my device list inside the Fitbit app, I get (as I said previously the following popup "Fitbit couldn't sync your data try again".

If I try adding my versa 4 as a “new device” under the “Add more devices” button on the Connected to Fitbit”/devices page in the fitbit app it asks me to “Replace with new Versa 4?” with warnings about losing my data & options of “Not Now” or “Replace”

I did eventually choose the “Replace” option to replace/re-pair the same Fitbit Versa 4 with my Android phone & Fitbit app (signed in with and switched over to google account from Fitbit a long time ago).

The point IS that your Fitbit “Updates”, “restarting” the Versa 4, or “shutting down” the Versa 4 should NEVER cause a “factory reset” without actually CHOOSING the “factory reset” option in the settings.

As THAT is what happened to me after a recent Versa 4 update which first caused the Versa 4 to suddenly lose 2-hours every day in the middle of the night until I decided to try restarting the versa 4 several times over multiple days. Restarting the Versa 4 multiple times had NO EFFECT on the watch repeatedly losing 2-hours in the middle of every night. After the multiple restarts of the Versa 4 over several days didn’t provide any resolution to the Versa 4’s repeated nightly 2-hour time losses, I shut down my Versa 4 through the settings on the Versa 4. Shutting down the Versa 4 apparently caused some sort of “factory reset” as starting up the Versa 4 gave me the versa 4 set-up screen while disconnecting the Versa 4 from the Fitbit app and my Android phone UNTIL I “replaced” that very same versa 4 with itself as a “new versa 4”.

I just ended up quitting the time suck of trying to sync this Versa 4 and
Google system takeover of Fitbit app fiasco.I might try again when I
replace my old Android as my operating system is lagging behind ability to
get system update. I can no longer reinstall the Fitbit app from Google
play store.
I had the Versa 4 for being a subject of a research study on heart disease
for one year. I shared data and extra year with two research groups and
clinics too. Personal investment lower as no money from me. Luckily.
The situation got worse since I saw the community notes in that I
eventually tried uninstalling Fitbit app thinking it would do better if I
reinstalled it. Then Google said Fitbit wasn't compatible with my phone. I
used Google store new "Fit" app and it got nothing through my Versa 4. My
Versa 4 does the language selection reset situation if I plug it into wall,
but doesn't advance. Now it is stuck on German. I just stopped wearing it!
Feel naked, but I think I was addicted to feedback. After 2 years, I
understand my heart rate and sleep. Just wanted it for Google maps during
unknown bicycle routes. For my usual stuff it is pointless.

I have the same exact issue. Now I cannot see anything but the logo and red X. This also happened after the update. What should I try next?

Seems like it's happening across the board. This has happen to me as well. Seems like what they want is for you to buy a new one. Just like any other device that comes out brand new.

I was looking for answer because I faced the same thing for my versa 4 - flashing screens and red cross. I found the solution and back here to help. Apparently, I learnt that this is a factory reset mode and I followed this YouTube video step by step and I managed to go back to normal : Get out of Factory Reset mode
