Versa - Crazy High Step Counts

Replies are disabled for this topic. Start a new one or visit our Help Center.

Not sure if anyone has been seeing this or not, but my Versa is incrementing step counts in the thousands while not even wearing it. For example, I just woke up with a step count of over 5,000 and I haven't even put the device on yet. Yesterday, my steps went over 32,000, and I really didn't do any deliberate activity to get me anywhere near that high of a count.

Anyone else?

That sounds verh high. Try restarting it a couple of times and see if that gets it behaving as it should.

Yeah, I contacted support and that's what they also recommended. I'm going to see if that fixes it over the next few days. I just wanted to see if anyone else saw that as some sort of bug since it's a new device. I never had any issues at all with my Charge 2.

My Versa has done the same thing. Last night I l left the device on the charger and at 4:30pm today when I went to put the device on my wrist again, I had over 9k steps without walking anywhere near that amount today. Even at work my highest this week is 7k.

So after resetting my Versa (Hold down the left and bottom right buttons until you see the Fitbit logo), it hasn't done it yet. I'm keeping an eye on it and will report back here if it happens again (or if it doesn't).

Glad to see I'm not the only one. 🙂

After speaking with Support on this they also mentioned not letting the
device charge on a service that's near a fan or anything that will make it
vibrate.

Yeah, they said that to me as well. Mine was on a night stand next to my bed with nothing else on it. Plus, 7-8k steps because of fan vibration? Seems a bit odd to me, especially when it never happened with my Charge 2 (or with my wife's Altra HR).

Hi all!  For those of you not wearing your Versas at night, are you by any chance putting them near a vibrating source like a fan?  These will often cause false steps.

Has there been any information regarding these high counts / ghost steps?

Other than blaming it on fans, delivery vans, or alien visitation?

Is FitBit going to be able to fix this (software/firmware), or is it a hardware issue with some of the devices been too sensitive?

I have been going through all the different Step Count posts, and aside from the Versa being the most sensitive delicate flower that can sense and track the oscillation of a fan from perhaps a township over, I have not read any solutions.

I have read

  • Reset,
  • Reset, reset, reset
  • Uninstall/reinstall
  • remove from app and re-introduce

Advice includes:

  • keep away from fans, refrigerators, vans (or all automobiles, because the vibration in your car could make it count steps), humming electronics of any kind, etc.

I would be more curious to find out if there is a fix.

This is not a fan in the vicinity issue.

I want to know too - is this software or hardware issue? If it's indeed a hardware issue, I want to return my Versa before the return period expires.

Nothing new for mine as of now. My Versa has been pretty accurate since I reset it the other day. I'm keeping a close eye though so I make sure it's not a fluke and I can return it within the allowable return period.

I spoke with a Fitbit rep on chat this morning after waking up with close to 5k steps in my sleep...

Last week it gave almost 2k steps while on the charger overnight and I was told it was the fan.. I let that go.. then this last night... the Versa was on my wrist, not the charger. Not really close to anything that could cause vibration..

After speaking with the rep today they didn’t provide any information as to why it was happening especially once I reiterated that there was no fan or anything causing vibrations. They basically said it was faulty hardware and offered to replace the Versa for me. Which is ultimately what I think I’ll do.

Yeah, I think I might have to do the same. I woke up again with almost 5k steps, nothing on or around the table it was sitting on. Sigh...

I have the same problem. 3rd time this has happened, only had the this Versa for 3 weeks. I supposedly did 53,820 steps today. Shut it down and still the same steps?

My new Versa is registering thousands of steps while I am sitting still. Can this be resolved or do I return the product as defective?

Noticing "steps" that SEEM to be caused by computer use. Especially clicking the touch pad. But, it's highly variable and I'm unable to reliably force this to occur by repeating certain actions. Typing doesn't seem to trigger "steps". Using a laptop with a 3 fan cooling pad, but simply being near that or resting my hand on the laptop doesn't seem to cause the Versa to record "steps".

I have the same exact issue with my Versa. Did not think too much of it the first time this happened. But it has happened 3 times in the last week! I wake up with 30k steps already logged! Definitely seems to be a hardware/software issue.. I do not have any fans close to where I charge my Versa. I have restarted my Versa today and hope it does not happen again.. But from what I read here in this thread is that folks have had issues even after restarting/ shutting down the fitbit.  Wanted to report my issue as well so that Fitbit can really look into this recurring issue and sort it out asap.. It really messes up the game plan when we are tracking our activities like a hawk in pursuit of our goals!!
