Versa battery suddenly dying

ANSWERED

Has anyone else experienced this issue: the battery is charged almost fully, let's say between 80-100%, and then suddenly you notice the watch has turned itself off and shows 0% when trying to reboot it.

This has happened a few times to me over the last few weeks now and it's starting to become annoying. This does not seem to be not a case of battery drain, I don't notice any drops in % it just suddenly switches off. When this doesn't happen the device easily lasts 4 days, with the exact same usage. So I cannot tell what is causing this.

Looking for some input before I contact support about this.

@MrGlenn, it's great to see you here.

I am sorry to hear your battery is draining faster than expected. We find that in some cases customers charge the device incorrectly; if you want to double check our charging instructions, you can do so at How do I charge my Fitbit device?.

Battery use is affected by various factors and settings. We provide tips for preventing battery drain at Can I improve my Fitbit device's battery life?If the charging instructions and battery preservation tips don't help, please let me.

Hope to hear from you soon. Smiley Wink

Unfortunately I have had this issue and now have not been able to wear my watch for the past two weeks! I have tried all the steps given from the fitbit guide but it has got to a point wear as soon I take it off the charger all I get is a black unresponsive screen, very disappointing!

I would try a factory reset, if not you may have to return it as faulty.

Good luck!

I actually came onto this forum to type almost the exact same thing!  This morning I had 100% and then suddenly at lunchtime it just died.  Battery completely drained!

I know I have been playing with it, but not THAT much! And especially since I charged it this morning and it was full.

Best Answer

If we are not charging it correctly, then how come when we take it off charge it says 100% charged?

Best Answer

This exact same thing happens to me! I will charge my Versa exactly as the instructions specify. When I take it off the charger, it reads 100% charged. I will wear it for maybe 2-3 hours afterward, and then it will randomly shut off! When I go to turn it back on, it's just a black screen. Then, when I put it back on the charger, it indicates the battery is completely drained. The weird thing is, this only happens when I charge it fully to 100%! If I charge it to 90% or so and then take it off the charger, I don't have the same issue!!!

My Fitbit Versa had the same. Got a replacement as it was verified by Fitbit customer service. Don’t wait, contact them because there are Versas out there with defective batteries.

This has happened to me twice in the past 24 hours. I don't have time to keep recharging it every few hours.

So I don't know if this is an actual solution for this issue for not, but for some reason it worked for me. When I contacted Fitbit about this issue, they initially thought I was talking about typical battery drain. The rep I spoke with told me to do a battery test, which involved shutting off all the extra features on my Versa (notifications, HR monitor, etc.) and then see how long it took my Fitbit to die. When I ran the test, everything came back normal--the Fitbit rep told me my battery drained as expected and there were no problems. I was slightly annoyed because this issue only happens when all my features are enabled, so I responded to them to clarify the issue. They told me to re-enable all my extra features and re-run the test. Since re-enabling the features about 2 weeks ago, I haven't had the problem since! Maybe worth a try!

I have a solution! Of sorts. 🙂

I contacted Fitbit and did all the tests - including running the battery all the way down (didn't take long!) that they recommended and sadly there did seem to be an issue.  Solution (of sorts) being they are now replacing my Versa for free!

I guess sadly not a solution to the battery issue, but I guess they can't all be "foolproof".  I'm really chuffed though that they are replacing it.

Thanks for your reply. They did the same for me, and fingers crossed, the
replacement Versa is functioning well. It was hard to be without it for the
couple of weeks while I waited for the replacement!

This problem is starting to sound like an epidemic. I have the same problem. I purchased my fitbit Versa in late August 2018, so it is less than 2 months old. I set everything up in the first day or two and have not changed any of the settings since then. It is set up to sync with my Samsung phone via Bluetooth, and vibrates when I get a call or text message, and shows the text message if I swipe down to check it. For the first 40 or so days it worked wonderfully! I was surprised at how long the charge lasted, usually 5 or 6 days! I could almost get away with only charging it once on the weekend, and I was using the heck out of it, checking it scores of times a day. I don't know if I set it up this way on purpose but it does the thing where if you lift your arm and look at your wrist is comes on and shows the time and your steps. I set it up to show the time and use it as a watch and set alarms on it, and did everything but shower in it (even though it is water resistant, because I was afraid of getting soap on the sensor or charging parts). So it was tracking my sleep all night long and steps etc. all day long for 5 to 6 or 7 days at a time. After 40 or so days it started lasting only 4 days, then 3. At about 50 days old I noticed a drastic drop in performance, it was almost dead at the end of each day. I stopped wearing it at night in hopes just sitting overnight and not tracking me would help but it just got worse. At about 55 days old, I was charging it overnight, and it would say 100% in the morning, and it would be completely dead and non-responsive by noon. Today I put it on with it saying it was 100% and in less than two hours it was dead. I immediately put it on the charger and it said 0%. Until the problems over the past few days I always charged it on the same 1 amp universal usb charger, plugged into the same surge protector that my laptop is plugged into. So it should not have suffered any surges. I have never charged it on a usb hub or tried to charge it directly from a usb port on my laptop. Thinking something might be wrong with that charger, I tried a few different ones, and different wall sockets, but all had the same results. Leaves the charger at 100% and is dead in a couple hours. No I have not turned off any of the notifications, bluetooth communications, etc. I should not have to. That is why I paid big bucks for the versa, to talk to my phone etc., which it did wonderfully for the first month without any problems. Seeing this same sort of message from many others makes me think there is a hardware problem or more likely a problem with the batteries that fitbit is using in their devices. I noticed someone posted that turning everything off for a while and running it down and charging it and turning everything back on seemed to have solved their problem. That would seem to indicate a software or firmware problem. I have not yet looked into how to contact fitbit customer service, but I think that should be my next step. Anyone know how to do that? Thanks. And good luck to everyone in getting their problems resolved.

Mine seems to be doing this. See my full post below. Mine indicates it is at 100% when I take it off the charger and a couple hours later I check it and it is black. Won't respond till I put it on the charger, and when I do that it says it is 0% and charging. Has happened repeatedly. I thought it was draining very quickly, but now that I have read your post I think it is more correct to say it suddenly goes from full or almost full charge to thinking it has zero charge and shuts off, because I don't recall seeing it with different % reduced, and it has not been sending me a notice to my cell phone via bluetooth like it did the first month or so I had it, when it would tell me that it needed charging by sending me a text message or email after I had been wearing it 4 or 5 days straight. I have seen no low battery warnings at all with this behavior. Working one moment and then some minutes or an hour or so later I check it to see the time or something and it is dead! It is less than 2 months old!

Did you every resolve your issues? If so what were they? Did you have to get it replaced? Thanks.

Thanks for sharing Mcgarvey. I tried turning every conceivable thing off, manually shut down my Versa, and charged it last night. It said 100% this morning, but when I removed it from the charger and put it on, it was very warm to the touch. It was dramatic enough that I noticed it where I had never noticed it being particularly warm when I put it on before during the past 2 months. I had the patience to sit and watch it drain down. I had thought it was lasting a few hours, but I was wrong. It is much shorter than that. It strangely lost exactly 1% per minute! Two minutes off the charger it was at 98%, a few more minutes and it was at 90%. So I started comparing the clock time to the % drain, and for the 45 minutes I watched it, it was going down just a bit over 1% per minute! At first I thought maybe it was going down because I kept checking the screen every few seconds. So I waited 20 minutes and when I looked, it had lost over 20% from the last time I had looked! After 50 minutes of checking it periodically, it was at 40%, meaning it lost 60% in 50 minutes, a rate of loss of 1.2% per minute! The goal of this test was to see if all the resets you did would work for me as well, and if not, prove whether or not it was just shutting off randomly and reporting 0% power after that event, or whether it was actually discharging continuously down to 0 power. After 87 minutes it was at 0%, so it looks like it really is discharging very quickly for no reason (or at least the software or sensors think and act like it is). In any case fitbit agreed to replace it and sent me a return label via email. Guess I am glad it decided to do this at 2 months old instead of waiting 13 months when it probably would have been out of warranty and not covered. Good luck to everyone with this problem.

Hi there. My Versa was replaced after I spoke with Fitbit support. I
haven't had any problems since.

I can't remember exactly the route I took on their webpage to find support,
but I think it was the following. Go to fitbit.com, click on Help on the
menu, and then click on Let's Talk/Get Support. Hope this helps.

Having the same battery drain issues. All if a sudden my battery doesn’t last a full day. It used to last 2-3 but now I can’t get a full day. I looked at the tips to increase battery life and it’s ridiculous. I bought a smart watch to use the features. This tip sheet is telling me to turn them all off!!!! Absolutely ridiculous. I hate this watch my first Fitbit that I don’t like. Not sure what to do with a watch that I have to turn off all features to use.

Alejandra,

I'm having the same problem as many of these posters. I checked the pages you recommended and I am charging my Versa correctly and turning off all unnecessary settings. With a 100% charge at the beginning of my bike ride, the Versa goes dead about 2-3 hours into my ride.

The charging instructions and battery preservation tips did not help.

What now?

Thank you.

This is happening to mine too.  I've had it for 3 months with no issues and now I can't keep it charged for more that 12 hours.   It's driving me nuts!

If it is still under warranty, contact fitbit and they will most likely
replace it as they did with mine. Good luck.

I contacted support and after running the battery drain test, they are sending me a new one. Yay!
