What characters are allowed in subscription IDs?

I tried to add a subscription with a dot in the subscription ID, and got a 500 error.(POST https://api.fitbit.com/1/user/-/activities/apiSubscriptions/3.activities.json)

 

I changed the dot to a dash and it worked. So it seems like dashes are OK and dots are not. What else is allowed and not allowed? I don't see this covered in the docs.
