My zip has started only recording part of my steps

My zip is not syncing all of my steps. Yesterday at one point I had 7896 steps and it is only recording 5096 approx. The day before it only synced 2000...something and I had over 6000 at one point when I looked. I have taken out my battery.  I have had a fitbit zip since 2014 and have never experienced these issues.

I turned my phone off and that seems to have corrected the problem.
