I bike a good amount, especially in the summer, and use MapMyRide, which always resulted in "translated" steps. Today it didn't do that, although the activity showed up. What's changed?

This seems like a very odd situation, since when did you start experiencing it? In this particular situation I would like to suggest you to restart the connection between both devices.
In order to do this:
- Go to My Applications on the Fitbit website.
- Search for MyFitnessPal and click on Revoke Access.
- Log into MapMyRide.
- Click the Improve tab and then select Device Connect.
- Find Fitbit on the list and click the Connect button. You're taken to fitbit.com.
- Log in with your Fitbit credentials.
- Go back to MapMyRide and go to your workout dashboard.
- Click the Import Workouts button
- Next to Fitbit click the Sync button.
