Not getting exercise options when categorizing

Yesterday I have gotten a new Fitbit versa. This is the 4th replacement I have gotten because the versa just starts to completely malfunction after a few months. I went horse riding yesterday and the Fitbit had automatically registered my activity and logged it as a run. I wanted to edit this log and change the activity to horse riding. I have done this before by choosing an activity of the list but now nothing comes up. The entire list seems to be completely gone. Before you would just put in the first letter and it would give you all the sports in the Fitbit list. Now nothing comes up whatever I try. There is only the very short list of some recent activities and nothing else. How can this be fixed? Again it is not that just horse riding is suddenly missing, the entire list is gone!

Moderator Edit: Clarified subject

So i have done the following

  1. Tap the 3 dots and chosen To edit the type of exercise , tap Categorize Exercise and then there is no list and nothing to choose from where before I would have typed h and search and then gotten all the types of exercise starting with h (or horse or whatever)

Hello @maartjevdm

you can type in a search (like horseback riding) but it’s not really clear on the app.....so I’ll just explain how to get there. Tap your exercise tile located with all your challenges your doing on the Fitbit App main page. If you tap the plus sight on the right of the tile you are adding something. So tap the plus sign and at the top of the screen tap “log” and begin typing and you will see horseback riding come up. Another way is from the beginning again this time tap the center of the exercise tile (not the plus sign) and tap what looks lIke a stopwatch at the top right side. Again here you can type in activities.

Now to edit an exercise (this only works on iOS devices) you tap which exercises you want to edit then tap the three dots then tap edit.

Thanks for your response but this is exactly what I have been doing. The point is that that no longer works since I gotten a new versa. Now when you type nothing appears. The list has disappeared. No matter what sport I look for and even just looking on the first letter nothing appears.

Sorry about the slow response @maartjevdm

This is quite strange that you can’t see it. I would make sure that you have the most recent update. It also wouldn’t hurt to completely delete the Fitbit App and then restart your device then reinstall the Fitbit app again. (You wont lose your data doing this) just reinstall and log in as you usually do. Let me know if that resolves the issue

Hi megabite thanks for us response. I followed your advice and deleted the app and reinstalled it and it did not fix the issue. I had last updated the app on the 10th of September and I think this is actually what caused the issue. Because before it was working as it should. Shortly after updating the app the versa that I had stopped working and seeing it was looking still within guarantee I returned it to the store and received a new versa. So it could also be a problem with the new watch but it seems more a software issue to me. I’m at a lost now what to do because I can’t change my activities and also if I want to manually register the list is gone so this is impossible as well.

Hello again @maartjevdm

I would agree with you that it sounds more like a software issue and not an issue with your Fitbit Versa especially in light of the fact that your issue has presented itself with both your new Fitbit Versa as well as the one you returned. I wonder if it’s a compatibility issue with your device. Check here to see if your device ( iOS or Android ) is compatible with the latest Fitbit update: https://www.fitbit.com/devices

Let me know what you find out because unfortunately if your current device is not compatible there is no way to get the app to do what you want it to do unless you use one of the compatible devices.

Hi @SunsetRunner thanks for your continued support. I have checked through your link and it is stated that my IPhone SE needs IOS 10 or newer. At the moment i have IOS 12.4.1 so it would seem that should not be the issue. What do you think? Thanks for any further support you can give as the problem persists

This is very strange @maartjevdm  because you are indeed completely compatible. I’m afraid you might have to call Fitbit Customer Service to have your problem resolved. I’m completely out of ideas. (Except for making sure you have the latest Fitbit App update 3.6 but I would strongly suggest you reframe from doing that....the newest 3.6 update at the moment, based on large amounts of people complaining under the iOS section of the Fitbit Community,  that the 3.6 update is completely crashing at the moment on iOS users) I’m sorry I was unable to help.

@SunsetRunner I think the update of 10 September caused this issue. I have just done the 3.6.1 update and although it hasn’t caused further issues it has also not solved the problem I’m experiencing. I have now deleted and reinstalled the app again, but still to no avail. Is the Fitbit customer service per country? I’m from the Netherlands so calling a customer service line in the USA seems not really a feasible course of action. Is Fitbit not supposed also respond to these threads as well? At least I think you are also just an user right and not related to the company

You are correct that I’m am just a Fitbit user like yourself. Moderators do monitor this site as well. I don’t know if moderators answer all questions....that is something I’m unaware of but again they do monitor the site and answer questions they see but I’m unaware of their patterns or methods of doing so. With that said I do know of a Fitbit Council that is very knowledgeable based on my experience here on this site. His name is @JohnnyRow  Because I imputed his name here he might see this thread and can further assist you. I’m really sorry I couldn’t be more help but maybe the council will be able to better assist you.

@SunsetRunner  you rang (for @maartjevdm)? (I'm not with Fitbit either.  The Fitbit moderators try to answer as many as they can but I expect getting to every one would be nigh impossible, or at least impractical).

I just skimmed the whole thread.

First issue.  I'm not sure what app you are using.  You are on the 'fitbit.com dashboard' board but are talking about Apple and iOS versions.  Have you been trying to edit your activity on the phone app or on the fitbit.com dashboard?

Here's what I see on the fitbit.com dashboard, which it sounded like at first.

From dashboard, I go to Log tab, then Activities tab, and scroll down to Activity History. For some items, there is a pencil next to Activity name. I click that and it opens an Edit box with a place to enter activity name.  It sounds like maybe you got to this place, yes?

As I start to enter something, it will fill in when it finds something starting like that.

To see the items that could be filled in, scroll to the bottom and on the right is an 'Activities' box with 3 tabs, favorites, most logged, and recent.  If you look under this tabs and don't see something you want, click 'create custom activity' to create another.

Before posting, re-read to see if it would make sense to someone else not looking at your Fitbit or phone.

@JohnnyRow thanks for giving me advise and thanks @SunsetRunner for the referral. So I was trying to do this in the Fitbit app which still does not provide any sports when trying to edit my activity. I now tried it in dashboard following your instruction and I have the option to edit but not a single type of sport comes up. I literally went through the entire alphabet to check if perhaps everything under H had disappeared and only with D it gives driving as an option and with M it gives motorcycle. Every other letter the response is “ Oh no we cannot find a match for your search”. Now I know for a fact this list was way longer the. Driving and motorcycle (extra weird that the only given option are we’re you are being moved by a vehicle). I have also tried editing other activities but the problem is the same for all. The reference we were making before was about if maybe my app was not up to date or my phone but both are. My guess is that the update of the app on 10 September caused this issue because before I could edit. As far as the app goes I have deleted and reinstalled it twice now to no avail. And thanks to you I now find out that the exact same problem occurs in the dashboard. Do you have any other ideas for a solution? Thanks so much for your help

@JohnnyRow Do you have any additional advice now it’s clear that the issue is there in the Fitbit dashboard and Fitbit app. Or is there any way to actual address Fitbit on this issue? Or is the only possible way in which they provide support through this community? I would sincerely hope Fitbit is actually accountable themselves. This I my fourth Fitbit versa because they just stop working after a few months. This brand new replacement seems to be working but now their software is failing me. It is so disappointing

Hi @JohnnyRow yes that is what I used to have and now in the app and dashboard the entire list has seemingly disappeared. So I went in both through the entire alphabet and only with D I get driving and M I get motorcycle. Which is particularly bizarre seeing you do not actual move yourself with those vehicles and I do not have a drivers license of any kind so I would never use those options. Any other letter nothing comes up so I can not manually log any workout and I cannot adjust any work out I have done using the work out on the watch or that has been logged automatically (such as horse riding being logged automatically as a run I cannot change it to horseriding whichever i used to be able to do). This takes away from the functionality of my Fitbit in a major way. I have few sports on my watch itself like yoga so if I put it I. Yoga mode it is logged and there is still a small list of 5 of the latest work outs I have done that I can click on. I do a lot of barre, horse riding and TRX and all of them I can no longer log. So any ideas on how to fix it I would very very much appreciate

Hi! I am experiencing exactly the same problem as @maartjevdm and also cannot choose from the list of activities for a while now. I also have an iphone SE, the newest fitbitapp and removed/reinstalled the app. Nothing is working though... i think it is a software problem too..

I’m really sorry @boersma and @maartjevdm

I’m at a bit of a loss on this one. I also like JohnnyRow can see a drop down menu and can type in activities on both the Dashboard as well as the Fitbit App. I know sometimes uninstalling and reinstalling an app will fix some issues but apparently that has not worked for either of you with the Fitbit app.... but the Dashboard is not something that can be manipulated as far as I know so that stumps me. I wish I could be more help but I’m afraid I can’t. I think the only thing left is to call Fitbit Customer Service and ask them. I have an iOS as well and completely updated on both my Fitbit App and my iOS device. This is a stretch but could it be a adobe flash sort of thing?? (This is a big stretch but maybe something Fitbit Customer Service might be able to shed some light on) Lastly I know several days ago the Dashboard activity area was completely blank for hours (I suspect maintenance) and then returned hours later. Maybe a change happened so if you haven’t completely shutdown your device, wait about two mins then restart your device I would try that.

Hi @boersma and @megabite I have also tried shutting down my phone and it also doesn't help. I have now emailed to https://contact.fitbit.com and I have gotten a response back. They have no clue what is causing the issue so they have asked me for screenshots which I have now shared. They also first said try in the dashboard as a work around even though I had explained clearly that the issue is the same in the app and the dashboard. When I get a response and definitely when I get a solution I will let you know. It would be good perhaps if you email them to. Feel free to also refer to this post by copying the link to the thread. I think if more people experience the same issue and let them know they are more motivated to solve it

@boersma out of curiosity do you have exactly the same thing that the only 2 options that you can select are driving and motorcycle (both of which I do not do)? Also looking at your name are you also based in the Netherlands? Who knows maybe it is a local issue in some weird way

Hello @maartjevdm

I appreciate you coming back and updating us on the status of your original post and letting us know that you are now in conversations with Fitbit Customer Service. As far as emailing Fitbit I don’t think that would be productive if I emailed them because I’m not experiencing the issue but I am just offering suggestions in my previous post as to things that you might be able to do to rectify the problem. I don’t work for Fitbit in any manner and I’m simply just a Fitbit user like yourself so I’m sure hearing from me would hold no real weight since I’m not experiencing any issues. I do see people on here experiencing similar or the same issues but you are the first individual I’ve spoken to that has the issue your describing. But regardless I do hope you do find a solution and if you would pass back your solution to this post it may help someone in the future who might find themselves in your current situation. Good luck to you.
