Welcome to the forums @DeeDeeH
From others who posted the same problem, there isn't much you can do.
Are you able to return the device from the place you purchased it?
It's always best to purchase something (new or used) from an authorized retailer, so it can be returned if something happens to it.

You can always ask customer support at this link - click
There is a phone number for the USA, an online chat option and web based email for those out of the area.
Since Mother's Day is almost here, many stores are having special sales with discounts. You might want to check around.
Doesn't the seller have another one so you can just swap out?

@DeeDeeH If you're seeing that message, you can be confident that the device you purchased was not manufactured or sold by Fitbit. As @Odyssey13 mentioned, the best course of action is to return it for a refund, as it is not genuine.

I just want to be sure it isn't a software problem before I accuse Amazon of selling counterfeit items.

I did learn about my activity levels and sleep patterns in the ten months my tracker worked, so something good came from it all, I guess. I'm not likely to replace it, though. With it off my arm, I feel suddenly free!

@SunsetRunner why not let Amazon know that seller had counterfeit products. It might help others in the future.
Keep on eye out for sales on Fitbit. You might want to get another one.
