Clasping and switching your Alta wristband

Replies are disabled for this topic. Start a new one or visit our Help Center.

One of the trickiest parts of getting started with a brand-new wristband tracker is simply learning how to get it clasped properly. The following post can help you with that!

How do I clasp my Alta wristband more easily?

  • Before putting the wristband on your actual wrist, you can clasp and unclasp your wristband repeatedly using both hands. This will help to loosen the holes in the band a little bit, and should make it a bit easier to clasp when it's actually on your wrist.
  • As detailed in this help article, most people have success with "pinching" the clasp between two fingers when they go to put it on. This will usually be more effective than simply pushing hard against your wrist, which is both awkward and potentially uncomfortable.
  • An awesome tip that has been shared by @Gmadiane is to place a drop of olive oil on the holes and push the clasp through. This seems to have worked for quite a few other users. Thanks for sharing!

  • Once your wristband is clasped, make sure that both the metal prongs are securely in their holes, as shown below on the left. If one of the prongs is still loose, as shown on the right, then the band is not yet secure and may come off your wrist unexpectedly.

We're confident that you'll be able to get your alta clasped with just a little practice. Don't be discouraged if it's difficult at first - it definitely gets easier over time!

How do I change my Alta wristband?

Fitbit Alta's wristband is detachable from the top and bottom of the tracker, so that you can replace it with accessory bands of different color or material. For help with detaching your Alta's wristband, check the steps in this help article, or watch the video below.

@Nurseanne - I bought one of the Amazon watch band type Alta bands. Here are my pros and cons:

Pros -

 - very pretty

 - inexpensive

 - this type of band is easier for those of us with arthritis

Cons -

 - it shipped from China, despite what the vendor said. I normally will not purchase directly from China. It's just my own personal rule.

 - the quality of the band is not as good as the Fitbit bands. It is a plastic-y material and irritates my skin if I leave it on for too long (more than 8 -10 hours). It's a nice change if I want a flowery band to go with an outfit for a party, but sadly, I find I cannot wear it all day and night. I guess you get what you pay for.

That's my two cents. 😉 The band I got is nice and I will use it .... but it's not Fitbit quality.

I bought the BSI high quality silicon band in teal. It feels as thick and textured as my original Fitbit band. It has a buckle and stays on. If you did not buy that one, you might try it. I wear it 24 hours a day except for showers.

@MzLlyren Sorry to hear about the difficulty you experience due to the arthritis. I have definitely passed your feedback along with the others in this thread who've experienced the same to our product development team. Thank you for your feedback.

I decided to buy a Fitbit today, and in looking at the various styles, the Alta suits me best. That said, coming here and seeing 14 pages of complaints about the fastener doesn't give me warm fuzzies. I think I'll wait until there's a fix for this issue.

@Gattina - I know it can look daunting but please keep in mind that the people who are happy with their Altas are not spending time on this forum. And they are in the majority.

Still....it's a valid question. Is there a solution in the works or not? It shouldn't take two people to put the band on.

I understand that, but the fact that there are so many complaints isn't encouraging. And they go all the way back to March. I would have expected Fitibit to have a fix by now.

Olive oil worked for me too.

I have found Alta bands made by other companies with a watch style clasp  Check Amazon.  The Alta itself works really well and I like that it's not bulky, but it is VERY frustrating to put on.  I'm sure it's just a matter of time before Fitbit comes up with a solution.

Have wrestled with this for a week! Great idea online that solved it. Slide an old style wooden ruler between the inside of your wrist and the strap and it fastens first time! The Fitbit is a great way to motivate me to walk further!

I purchased a replacement band with a watch clasp on Amazon (link below.). I love it and will likely order the set of all different colors. Finally, I can wear my Alta every day.
