Fitbit Update: 3/6/19

Hello everyone!

We have some updated troubleshooting suggestions we'd like for all of you on Android Pie (9.0) to try.

First, turn off Background Restrictions/Limitations: Phone settings > Apps & Notifications > Fitbit app > Background restrictions or Background limits.

Then, disable battery limitations:

  1. Go to Settings > Apps > Fitbit app > Advanced > Battery > Battery optimization
  2. Change view to All apps
  3. Search for Fitbit app
  4. Choose Not optimized

Please give the steps above a try to improve syncing with your Fitbit device and Android 9.0 OS. We're still researching and testing out long-term solutions to this ongoing syncing issue. We thank you for all your patience while we continue to work on this effort.

Fitbit Update: 10/3/18

Hey Everyone!

Our team is still working on implementing a longterm fix for syncing with Android devices on Pie (9.0).

For the background syncing issue, I have posted an update in the other floated thread which you can find here

We released Fitbit for Android version 2.80 today which contains improvements for that syncing issue.

I'll make sure to keep you all updated with more information, as soon as I have it available. We're still working on this and I really appreciate everyone's patience.

Fitbit Update: 9/26/18

Hey everyone!

Thanks so much for your patience and cooperation. We are aware of the issue and working with Google on a solution.

I will continue to provide updates here, so keep an eye on this thread.

Fitbit Update: 9/10/18

Hi, everybody!

Thanks for your patience while our team continues to work on improving syncing for those on Android Pie (9.0). They are actively working on this and for the time being, I recommend you keep the Fitbit app updated on the latest version for best syncing results. Right now that is version 2.78, so if you're not on this version please update! Also, another troubleshoot we recommend is performing a restart on your phone.

When there are more improvements made in the future I'll announce them here. Stay tuned and subscribed to this thread.

Fitbit Update: 8/19/18

We have escalated these syncing issues for those who are now using Android Pie (9.0) to our team for investigation. There aren't any updates at the moment, but rest assured we will keep you informed in this thread when more information is available.

Thanks for your patience!

Fitbit Update: 8/11/18

Hi, everyone! Thanks for stopping by the Community Forums. Smiley Happy

Seems like many of you who updated to Android Pie (9.0) are now having trouble syncing your Fitbit trackers. I'm going to escalate this to our team so they can look into it.

In the meantime, please update the Fitbit app to version 2.76.1 if you haven't yet. Let me know if that changes the syncing behavior. Please follow this thread for updates. I'll keep you all posted here!

I guess I did it.

As a senior developer and tech professional I gave a try at least to figure out what was going on, I went deep into bluetooth documentation, not going to tell the details for the sake of keeping this as clear as possible. After reading (and trying to understand) how BLE works I found something that seemingly fixed this.

So I started testing everything from the Fitbit app and everything seemed to work, manually and automatically, from the hearbeat readings, stepcounts, IM apps notifications, even changing the watch face colors (using the default watch face).

I mentioned in a previous post that I was going to do a factory reset of the phone, but I never did it, I'm just going to keep doing more testing in real life situations like, phone restart, watch restart, getting away from the phone, connected GPS, turning Bluetooth off and so on.

Please be advice that I'm not going into the details since I'm not sure if there are any side effects using this method, so If any Fitbit official is reading this, please contact me privately and I will openly tell you about it.

There is hope.

Fitbit's official updates are being made in this thread:

Having said that, it's been quite a while since their last update.

After several testing, am glad to report that our Versa is working flawlessly right now.

Device is running on firmware 32.32.12.19 and the phone is a Nokia 7.1 US, Android 9.0 with november 2018 security patch level and version 2.83 of the Fitbit app.

Nothing else on the phone seems to be affected, all of the currently paired devices are still working fine.

Hello everyone.

Thanks for sharing all those details about your current situation.

Please do know that if you are using a phone that is not part of supported devices list we cannot guarantee that it will sync, whether it is running Android 9 or not. As long as it fulfills the minimum requirements, Android 4.4 and Bluetooth 4.0, there is a possibility that it can work.

If you have already tried these troubleshooting steps to no avail, you could try to use a computer or another mobile device to try and sync your Fitbit to your account. Click here to get instructions on how to sync with other devices.

Let me know if there is anything else that I can help you with.

Same issue here, running Nokia 8 with Android Pie.

Hello, everyone!

Today i have updated my Nokia 8 to Android Pie and had the same issue, the sync process just wouldn't work with my Fitbit Charge 3. I have tried restarting my phone, disabling and then enabling Bluetooth, unpairing the device and then pair it again (did not work at all), reinstalling the app.

What i found, though, is that this trick worked for me. With a little caveat. Here are the steps i took:

1. Uninstall the Fitbit app from Android phone.

2. TRIED to pair from Bluetooth app. It did not finish the pairing process, although i tried 3 or 4 times.

3. Installed the app back.

4. Runned the pairing process from the app and everything worked perfectly!

I will keep this post updated if there will be future sync problems.

Oh look Fitbit has ****** up again, phone updated today to pie and can't sync at all, and can't even repair Fitbit. Tried all the suggestions. This is not their first time.

Time to leave this **** company, but these devices aren't exactly cheap or a good time of year to be filling out for another device, all because Fitbit is crap at software.

I tried a multitude of things, but this order finally got it to work for me.  I don't think I tried to pair the fitbit with my phone after uninstalling the fitbit app.  In my case, it did finish the pairing process, and reinstalling the app did the trick and I'm syncing again.

Notifications don't seem to be working, which is no big deal for me.  And it did revert once to not working when I got home this evening. It could be that my tablet that I had paired with my fitbit reconnected and messed up the connection to the phone.  I turned off bluetooth on my tablet, and went through the process again to uninstall the app, re-pair, and re-install, and it's syncing again.

Very fragile, but at least I have "something".

Has anybody tried with a phone factory reset? My devices are still working as they should however, I'm planning on doing it on my phone when I get a chance during the weekend, just to see how does it behave with a clean Pie initial boot.

I've tried every fix posted on this forum thread the past 4 months and
nothing works, including a factory reset. My Pixel phone and Fitbit haven't
sync'd since the August 6, 2018 Pie update.

Fitbit no longer supports Android and Google is no help either. I've
contacted both organizations.

Your best bet is to dump Fitbit and/or revert back to Oreo. My fix is
switch to a non-Fitbit fitness tracker or switch to a Apple device which is
still supported - I'm evaluating options.

Good luck!

My family is into pure Google experience.

Our setup at the moment is the following:

Me: Pixel 3XL + Ionic

My wife: Pixel 2XL + Versa

My elder son: Pixel + Charge 3

All our Pixels are updated Android 9 and all of them work great. Pixel and Pixel 2XL have bee factory reset after upgrade to Android 9

Giampi71, obviously you've been paid off by both Fitbit and Google to make
your post. You're just a talking paid of head.

@SunsetRunner  In my post I also stated clearly what can be the solution: factory reset post update. It doesn't seem you have ever tried it from you post while of course you like to spend your time complaining.

You assume a lot. Plenty of us have tried everything and it doesn't work, this is not the first time this has happened either. It's clear the company is shoddy. Combine that with all their product issues like bubling on the original charge.

Been using Fitbit for at least 4 years and I think longer and have had every single device I've owned replaced ataleast once, it's the final straw, should have happened earlier, like pretty much everyone else has done. Go back a few years and everyone was on fitbit. Now virtually no one. The company has issues.

In a few days a gear fit2 pro will arrive and then from the list of friends, that'll leave just one on Fitbit, everyone else in the list is inactive as they have moved on to other brands

Everyone reading this thread, Here's what worked for me:

1. Downloaded the Fitbit app for windows 10 and synced with my laptop. (I only did step 1 because I didn't want to lose my data, although I did lose some sleep data.)

2. Unpaired/forgot the fitbit device and deleted from my account using the laptop.

3. Deleted fitbit app from phone and laptop. Made sure fitbit wasn't paired via bluetooth at all.

4. Factory reset Fitbit. (I have the Versa and had to google how to do this, but there should be a way to do it with any fitbit.

5. The versa had some issues when I factory reset it. It was no longer a recognizable bluetooth device and I did not know what was wrong. There was an error message on the watch display that the data was not erased properly and that I needed to sync (haha, thats my whole issue). Magically when I got home from work the watch was working again (probably because it was connected to wifi? I know not).

6. After the factory reset took, I reinstalled the app on my phone and set it up as a new device. It took forever (longer than when I originally set up the watch I think) but it worked. It has been syncing properly ever since.

7. I should also note that I needed to update software on the watch itself, which I waited a couple days to do because I was afraid it was going to fail again and then stop syncing (which is what happened when I first updated to pie). It took, and the watch works, for now.

NOTE: I did not factory reset my phone, although I could have. It is a brand new pixel 3 and I didn't really want to. Online chat help was no help when my watch had the issue after the factory reset, and they likely also have no clue why it would suddenly start up again either. That will remain a mystery to me, hopefully, you don't run into the same issue.

I've been monitoring this thread since last August when the Android Pie system update broke the auto syncing function.

I've got an unlocked Pixel 1 XL with a Fitbit One (firmware 6.60). I got the December 5 security patch two days ago. Since then my fitbit is syncing regularly. I haven't been able to auto sync since August with the Android 9 push. I have been able to sync manually by rebooting my One in it's dongle or going into settings/Connected devices/Pair New Device/ then pressing and holding when the One was found. #HopefulButDisappointedBefore
