Are you referencing your true total steps, or are you referring to your rolling 7-day total; your total steps will never go down, your rolling total will drop after midnight every day as the 7th most previous day's activity drops off.

You might want to edit your post to remove the three miles of white space 🙂
Anyway, on Dashboard/Friends, it shows the last 7 days total, not lifetime.

Then all you're looking at are your steps for the six previous days plus whatever you've done today. To look at your lifetime steps you should look at this tile on the Dashboard:
