August Wanderlust 2024 — Step Challenge and Photo Scavenger Hunt

The end of summer or winter looms and there are only a few more weeks for a getaway or two before the seasons change. You still have to get your steps though, so make your plans with some travel in mind and post your monthly goals here.

How It Works

The primary purpose of these monthly challenges is to encourage you to set and hit your daily step goals for the month; though many of us track other things as well, like body weight exercises, sleep, trips to the gym, logging food, etc. This is not a competition to see who can do the most of whatever, instead it is a challenge to measure your consistency. So whether you do 1k, 5k, 10k or even 40k steps a day, this is measuring how many days out of the monthly total you can hit your goal.

Some might have a constant goal of 10k steps every single day and others might have a variable goal throughout the week, (and some might even plan days off!) for example.
Monday -> Friday = 10k steps a day
Sat & Sun = “6k steps a day,” or “not tracking”

Regardless of how you structure your daily goals, the only thing that matters for the monthly challenge is whether or not you reach what you set out to do.

Suggested Posting Format
1) Post either your constant or variable step goal.
2) Keep track of the # of daily goals achieved out of the monthly minimum and or monthly total

Picture Scavenger Hunt — 3 pictures

IMG_6275.jpeg

The theme this month is wanderlust ... the road, the trail, going somewhere, and what you see along the way.  A few years ago we focused on bridges and overpasses.  That would be good. So would anything from the Paris Olympics!  Post your goals below and post your pics throughout the month.

Posting

Although you certainly don’t have to post daily, you’ll likely stay closer to what you set out to do by updating the thread several times/week

Injury Notice
If you injure yourself during the month and need to scale back due to the injury, then all you have to do is adjust your goal for that period. If you normally do 10k steps a day but pull a hamstring and decide to do minimal walking (2k steps a day), then all you have to do is change your goal.

Wow, August is nearly at an end and I've barely posted this month. Been a little busy at work, so that's probably why. I'll catch up my numbers tonight after I get back from my unicycle ride. @Vidd I'm happy to see that you seem to be getting some attention with the new doc. Frustrating that it takes so much effort. On the other hand, I'm now quite impressed by your sock mending skills!  @Jotex two castles so far this month? That's pretty impressive. I really like the first picture of the mountains that you posted.

I did hike on Sunday and I was following a trail up a hill in the woods next to a stream and this little fellow shows up. Light was really bad, but I cleaned it up a bit with some software. Tennessee warbler. A first for me.

@Jotex , You're right about Leonardo - wouldn't it be amazing to meet a man like that today?  I'd love to learn more about the immersive experience you went to.

@Baltoscott Thanks for the kind words about my darning!  It's been quite a shock to go through my socks and find so many needing attention.  I've only thrown out one pair so far, which was on the grounds that it would have probably doubled its weight if I'd darned all the holes and badly worn bits.

No news on the referral yet, since it went off last week.  Waiting wasn't helped by Monday being a Bank Holiday in the UK, so most things were closed.  The first hurdle to clear is the referral being accepted by the hospital. so I'll be relieved it it doesn't get sent back.

I've extended my morning walk by about 15 yards.  That's quite a big deal!  I now go beyond the seat to the big sycamore tree visible in the picture I posted on page 1 - it's visible where the path turns slightly.  It's the summit of the walk!

@Jotex -- Yes. Like most warblers, the Tennessee Warbler is migratory in this part of the US. And my Sibley guide shows it as 'scarce' in my area right now. The black line along the eye is also on vireos, but my Merlin apps says Tennessee Warbler and the experts in the Maryland bird identification facebook group agree with that.

Mixed results this month. Really need to get the weight lifting days worked back into my schedule, but I was close on bike mileage and close on sleep days. Good thing I've got those low pushup and pullup goals :-). Usually do more, but going for 1 gets me started.

"You're right about Leonardo - wouldn't it be amazing to meet a man like that today?  I'd love to learn more about the immersive experience you went to." You're so right @Vidd . The immersive is a special lightshow video (?) that shows / tells about some of the life and creations of a famous artist. They're all dofferent, of course. I've seen the ones of Monet, Van Gogh (x2), Picasso (disappointing...), and daVinci. If you get a chance, or perhaps one day it'll appear on YouTube it's a worth 1-hour of your time.

@Jotex Thanks for that.  It would have to be YouTube for me just now, so I hope it might appear there one day.
