How do people work to get above 20,000 steps?

ANSWERED

I am active (run three miles in the morning, work all day, goof around with children in the evening while I do housework but getting above 20000 steps per day seems elusive to me. Help!

I wouldn't spend the money on a premade treadmill desk.  There are easy ways to build one or rig one up.  I just wedge a lap desk under the bar of my Vision Fitness treadmill and it works fine.  I work for an out-of-state company from a home office so the noise is not an issue.  I don't use it much, just when weather is bad or I'm really behind in both my reading and my steps.  (By 'bad weather' I mean Phoenix bad, so please no 'bundle up!' advice!)  And I wouldn't use it more than an hour.  I'm prone to burnout and if there's anything dull it's the treadmill, even with a computer in front of you.

While it is true you can buy a regular treadmill and add a desk surface, I got the combination for about $800 and the treadmill is properly rated for slow speeds over long periods of time.  Most treadmills will degrade quickly if used at slow speeds over long periods of time because they are really designed for people to run on or at least walk briskly.  I put about 100k steps on my treadmill each week.  It really depends on commitment to it.  Since I have to work at my computer either way, walking to do it or sitting in a chair it is still the same activity.  One I get some calories burned the other nothing.  

 

For me the investment forced my hand, I spent this money I had better use it.  Got on and haven't stopped using it since.  I even walk on it and watch TV from time to time, although that is better suited for the real treadmill in the gym as this has a top speed of 4MPH.

Wow, $800 for the pair is a great deal.  I've seen them for $5000+.  I figure for that price I can burn through 10 used treadmills.

Not sure I could walk on treadmill while trying to work on computer.

I do between 20,000 and 25,000 steps a day - equals about 3 hours walking. Usually a 90 minute walk in morning and another in evening. Or I also do Leslie Sansone walking DVD for 1 hour.
I did my first 1/2 marathon walk the other weekend - great motivation to keep your walking going when you know you need to train. Highly recommend it.

I'm always more intrigued how people get 200,000 or 300,000 steps a day, seems a little suspicious to me.

if you say that the average person does about 5 miles per 10k steps, 200k steps would be over 100 miles of steps in a day.  I don't think you will find anyone legitimately doing 100 to 150 miles of walking/running each day.  Pedometers are easy to fool but why buy one if your purpose is just to post false details.

I spend 1.5 to 2.5 hours on the treadmill three days a week, and I actually enjoy it and never find it to be boring.  The key is to vary my workout....one day it's race walking, another day is interval training, other days may be doing the mountain or hill walk.   I have a TV, stereo, DVR, and Roku 3 in that room, which keeps me occupied.   I've been doing long treadmill workouts for several years and never tire of it.  It all depends on personal preference and what you personally enjoy.

I enjoy your posts...You inspire me! Thanks for the great sharing. I was "that kid" who HATED gym and always thought of myself as a klutz. I am figuring out that I am just a late bloomer, and my Fitbit is one of the best tools I've ever found: it keeps me motivated and pushing myself. I'm having a great time figuring out new ways that I enjoy being active! I'm even having a great time this winter (!) Snowshoeing daily with my dog, and even started skijoring last week. WOOHOO!Smiley Very Happy

Only if you have short legs! Even though I'm not particular tall, my running stride is 0.95 m, so a marathon would "only" get me 42,195 / 0.95 = 44,416 steps.

I am very dedicated to my steps--I average 25,000-27,000/day. I will walk for 2hrs straight in the early am and around another hour or more in the afternoon or evening. I am busy at my job and stay on the go. This amount of steps is hard to keep up, but it's doable. I have another friend who walks intense like this. I will average around 182,000/week.

wow 20000 steps beforfe work, seriously?

 

HOw much time does that take, it takes me 30 minutes to get just 3000 steps in the evening. My highest day is 15000 and I was basically constantly walking around my house. Side stepping back and forth while cooking and cleaning the kitchen. It seems almost impossible if working during the day to get 20000,

I measured my steps on the track at a fitness club. I run 140 steps and walk 60 steps for each tenth of a mile. So a mile for me is 2000 steps. 20,000 steps would be ten miles. I run/walk about 4 miles per hour. So to get 20,000 steps would take me two and a half hours. I have never done it. I don?t have any intention of doing it. I signed up for a fun race in a couple of weeks that is 10k, which is less than 7 miles. That will be a stretch, but I am training for it. For me, 20,000 steps a day seems like an unrealistic goal. I have too many other commitments. Maybe after I retire.

My best day was 57k steps, but that's when I did a marathon. I usually average 15k-20k steps per day. I try to run a 10k at least once a week and run a 5k every other day and go up 200 floors once a week. Unfortunately I might have to cut back soon. But 20k isn't hard to get when you're moving all day.

I think we all have different goals and that is ok

20000 steps was good to accomplish I might not have to do it everyday but fun to tryst top day is 15000.

Fun to try and be creative and get the steps !
