How do women over 60 get in shape?

Hi all!  I am starting this thread to help all the ladies from our old forum get started up again over here in the new place.  Hope you all find this thread.  Getting in shape after 60 has its own challenges especially when you have lost muscle, have slowed metabolism and hormone changes.  How are you getting and staying fit?  What s working for you?

My father was a childhood diabetic, so I was diagnosed about 10 years ago and I am a type 1 on insulin. I to could lose a lot of weight, but nothing is coming off yet. Walking is one of the best exercise you can do for yourself. Just find ways to keep moving.

Bonjour,

Je me dépense beaucoup.

Bonne chance.

Hi RiverGal,

If you go to your dashboard up at the top is a choice titled Community. Click on that. Then choose Connect, Comptete and get motivated with other fitbit users. Then you will find a group called: Women over 60. This group is very active, supportive, very motivated and they have great ideas to help us along. They also have recipes, quotes and right now they are 307 strong. They post a lot, but it sure is great advice. Give it a try.

Hi Folks - I've been using a Fitbit for 2 years & love it!  I just thought I would give the discussion group a try.

Hi - will be 73 next month and HAVE to get moving again!! Was doing well until my dog passed away in the Fall (we took 3 walks per day).  Have just started walking again and using Fitbit again AND writing in my food. Will start slow at 6,000 steps per day and work my way up as I am able (have 2 steel hips). Bev

Also - plan to get an adult rescue dog after my house sells and I move.

Hi, I'm new here, as well. I'm 67 yrs. old and suffer with RA which makes exercising somewhat difficult. Luckily, I am still able to walk, so my Fitbit is wonderful for me. I've been on Nutrisystem for the past month but have plateaued so I know I need to jump-started my metabolism. I'm hoping that this will motivate me to get moving more.

Bev, I'm so sorry to hear about your loss. My son and daughter-in-law are planning to get a rescue dog, too.

Thank you Dinca, the secret to getting into shape when we are "up there" in years and have some physical issues - is to increase efforts very slowly. If I push too fast there will be sore muscles and ligaments. Still, it is hard to restrain myself. However even the 6,000 steps/day is difficult for me right now but the fitbit does keep me trying.  Does anyone else keep checking the step count many many times per day?  Bev

Wow bawtrey102--Good for you!! I am going to Ireland in a month but with hubby along we won't be hiking anywhere it isn't required! If I were alone I would love to do some of the marvelous walking trails they have but maybe another time. This trip is to see our ancestors homelands and communities. I just did my first 5k and am doing a 10k in 2 weeks!

Hi, I'm new to the community, over 60, and saw your posting about your weight loss.  Can you please share how MyFitness Pal and Fitbit worked to help you lose so much.  I tried caloriecount and fitbit, but really only lost a little and then of course gained it all back plus.  Is there a way to see what you eat and what exercise you do so maybe I could try to mirror that???  By the way, congratulations on your great achievement!

Hi
I got the message and if you sign up to my fitness pal you can have it sync to your fitbit. It's in the settings - sharing. Then log all your food in mfp and it will sync to your fitbit. Mfp is the best for logging food. They have all the restaurants etc. I scan all my package food. It's awesome.much easier than putting food in fitbit. I also join the monthly challenge on fitbit. Last month it was 15000 steps a day. It was tough at first but now I do that almost every day. Just decided that I can do it. Now I am addicted to walking and fitbit. It encourages you to keep on walking. I'm also on map my walk and that syncs with mfp and fitbit so I have lots of encouragement there. I eat about 1300 calories a day. Hope this helps. Good luck! You can do it.

Hi flybetty. I also check my steps, miles, calories burned often during the day. I'm wondering if doing that will run down the battery in my tracker sooner? I can't seem to stop myself from checking frequently, though. Maybe after I've been here a while I won't feel the need to check my stats so often.
