Did you mean:

Bamboozled by food ....

This forum is full of questions about different meals, ideas to share,  tips and tricks of what to buy or how to make a recipe.... I thought it would be fun to see the flipside of the coin.

What is a food item you regret trying, and would never use or do again?  And why ?

Here is my little tale:   I look to find snack foods that are low carb. Crackers are something I try to replace with alternatives.  I grabbed a bag of Annie Chun's Cracked Pepper and Herb seaweed snacks from the grocery.  Hmm... seaweed wrapped around sushi was pretty good... why not as an herbed snack? Cracked pepper?   Even better!

Uhm, NO.   It was flimsy. It stuck to my tongue like a Listerine strip; But let me assure you - wasnt as refreshing.  It tasted like day-old fish in the fridge.  Could not find the cracked pepper, either. Needless to say, the entire package made its way to the trash can and I will nevermore look at those again with any level of admiration.

So, whats your moment?

Kale chips.  I know that kale is supposed to be the healthiest food in the world, but I have never found a way to make it something I don't want to spit out.  I thought that chips might be the answer because everyone raves about them.  Wrong.  Kale chips are very wrong.

What an interesting question!  I love trying new foods and recipes and luckily have more hits than misses.  However, inspired by my co-op/natural food store's newsletter I tried making cauliflower "rice."  This involves pulsing raw cauliflower in a food processor until it is grain-sized, then treating it like rice in a dish of one's choosing.  I made a Mexican rice bowl with beans, salsa, and other toppings.  Gross!  The cauliflower "rice" was wet and oozed moisture, and it tasted like, well, raw cauliflower.  Cauliflower, I love you, but let's stick with our winning roasting relationship!

Stevia. Cannot go near the stuff no matter what name it is marketed under. I get violently ill with even minuscule amounts.

My list:

  1.   Octopus - I don't like food that refuses to be swallowed.
  2.   wasabi - In the words of Mater, "The pistachio ice cream has done turned"
  3.   orange food, carrots, sweet potatoes, oranges, etc
  4.   Subway "chicken" subs.  I have bought, I have tasted, I always toss.
  5.   Milk

I'm moderately lactose intolorent, cows milk anything in any significant quantity causes me to curl into a ball and hate the world. Raised in Wisconsin and having moved to California (the first and second largest dairy states respectively) I love my cheese. Before I discovered goat and sheep cheeses weren't a problem I tried some daiya vegan cheese. That stuff is a trap. It is nothing remotely like cheese, not even close to American Slices. If you really feel so strongly about animal rights as to give up food that's fine; but if you're making a sacrifice for princples why would you undermine it with disgusting substitutes?

I agree, if your that strong in your beliefs why would you by a $60 meatless turkey, made with tofo and in the same health food store and saw what they called a genuine vegaterian cheesesteak. Just pop in the microwave and eat.

Tofo cheese and tofo meat? sounds like a well ballanced meal. The only thing on it that looked edible was the onions.

I to have a lactose intolerance, just the little bit of milk in mashed potatoes gives me craps. I have found that hard cheeses don't give me any problems.

Try roasting the cauliflower on a pan in the oven. A little olive oil and salt then cook. Remove and use a potatoe masher. Not soggy and a nice roasted texture. Make that change and you will change your mind about this substitute for rice. ... I also like a yogurt/garlic sauce on this "rice" after mashing.

For me, it's hummus. I know a lot of people like it, but I just can't get into it.

This is a good idea.  Thanks!

I'd second this! I just don't understand hummus at all. I'd much rather make a chunky pea puree or tomato salsa to dip veg and bread into.

I didn't particularly like seaweed thins when I first tried them, but actually I persisted with the little box of 12 I had, and by the end they were alright. I think I'd try them again, but would be more inclined to buy them and toss them into soups/stews, as they rehydrate into something a bit like wilted spinach.

I am right there with you. I juice Kale. I realize I can get a lot of Fiber from eating it but I won't eat it. I juice a lot of veg and fruit...mostly stuff I won't eat. I am getting the nutrients and enjoying the juice so I figure it is a win/win.

I attempted to make a cauliflower pizza "crust" by steaming, mashing, draining the liquid and mixing it with egg and a bit of cheese. It was AWFUL. I love cauliflower but I will never again try to substitute something as distinct in texture as pizza crust. It ain't the same.

It's so interesting to see foods I love detested by others. I agree about Kale. I can only use it liquified in my Nutribullet and disguised by fruit, almond milk, protein powder, cucumber and celery. The food I tried and immediately spit out was cauliflower made into fake mashed potatoes. Ugh. (I do like cauliflower raw though.)

I can not stand seaweed either in snack form. I can't get into feta or goat cheese no matter how much I try. I am not huge on gucamole like everyone else either but the 2 things that I can NOT eat is yogurt and applesauce. With applesauce its a texture thing I can not stomach the texture and with yogurt no matter what flavoring, or type (I have tried them all!) I just don't like it. Oh and I hate mustard!
