Anyone else's Ionic scratch almost immediately?

Bought the Ionic two days ago and have been careful the entire time. Looked down this morning and there are two scratches right on the display.

So much for the "scratch proof" claim Fitbit makes.

Fitbit has made a lot of claims about the Ionic, but "scratch proof" has never been one of them. You'd be hard-pressed to find any details about its display on their web site.

Fitbit marketing did use the phrase scratch proof and provided that to online retailers, posted it on Instagram, and it was even on this forum until recently.

This is absolutely correct, there were multiple claims as you say.

Nasty, but not surprising. This is Fitbit after all.

The Ionic press release made a bold claim that Ionic would outlast any activity you do during the day and still track sleep. Wrong. Fitbit, get back to me when you have 24+ hour GPS tracking.

Where has Fitbit made a claim the watch is scratch proof?

and the exact same sentence "The high-resolution color touchscreen features scratch-proof Corning Gorilla Glass 3..." appeared on this forum (since changed), and in the description found on various online stores (some have changed description).

i put the IQshield on mine.. it is a wet install... but since the ionic can go in water, this is no problem... apply... let it dry and cure overnight.

You cant even tell that it is on there.

Do you know if it is possible to replace the screen protector after some time if it gets banged up? Or is it pretty glued on?

I have had mine since about Oct. 2nd and have not seen it scratched yet. I have banged it a couple times on things and have been working on projects around the house. I had the Blaze for about a year and they both have the same kind of screen. The difference with the Ionic is that the band and bezel around the screen area better protect the edges on the top and bottom. My Blaze had shown wear on the top and bottom edges.

Me too pretty much straight away, I have a scuff mark on the screen. I didn't opt for a screen protector because of the scratchproof claims; I have now order screen protectors, I guess if you use it it will get bumped and scraped along the way. Disappointing but with hindsight and all.Smiley Frustrated

IQ Shield also makes a Full Body protector which mostly covers all the metal parts of the Ionic as well as the screen and I've installed that on mine and definitely feel it is more protected.  Got it on Amazon and this is the link:

So far, I'm very happy with it.

I'm not against screen protectors (although i'd rather not have to use one), and if they said scratch proof, then that's a boo on them.  Everything scratches, just depends on how likely.

That all said, until we had devices with touchscreens, i never saw screen protectors for normal watches.  I'm assuming that a normal wrist watch (analog, Seiko, swiss, casio, Rolex, whatever) had glass or some transparent material and it probably scratched up a bunch in normal wear and tear.  Always a bummer to see a scratch, even in those cases...

Maybe we are more sensitive (or just want a statement of scratch proof to mean something) to scratches now because we use these screens for MUCH more content than just the time (and date).  Or is the glass (gorilla glass) just a softer material so that it can provide the touch interface?

I know the Ionic (or any smart watch) is not cheap, but classic geared analog watches were not cheap either (hundreds of dollars easily).  Certainly not saying we should just deal with it because we had to earlier.  if we have ways of protecting things we buy, great!  it is good to have options.

Just something i was thinking about as I consider buying a screen protector.  What is different now vs 40 years ago? 🙂
