I had the same problem with the red X and data not cleared message... after trying all the solutions listed and several other attempts I found the solution that worked for me & my Ionic... I contacted Support via messaging... A wonderful person, 'Loren' was very helpful and polite in giving me easy to follow instructions on how to reconnect my ionic fitbit and get moving once more! It was done in about 10 to 15 minutes... not counting finally getting the firmware download which took a bit longer. Well worth the time as I had spent most of the day trying to do it myself.

This worked for me.  Had to resurrect the watch after it failed an update to the tracker firmware.

I get this error message at least once every couple of weeks.....the first time it happened I was really stuck.    Now it literally takes me less than 10 minutes to reset.

Step 1....turn off the blue tooth on your phone

Step 2....go into your Fit bit app and unpair your phone and your device....usually I just hit the button for add a new device and it asks me if I wish to replace my existing fitbit and I answer yes.

Step 3.....phone then asks if it can turn blue tooth on to which you answer yes

Step 4.....it then searches for your device and you get once it finds it it asks you for the 4 digit code that is now displayed on Fit Bit screen

Step 5...... allow the system to reconnect with your Fit Bit device...takes about 10 minutes to upload everything and Voila!

or you can check in your Fitbit app if their is an update for your band. If so then update your band.

I'm sorry to disappoint you but my issue was a defective device which
was replaced as it was still on warranty.

Some others resolved the issue by resetting the device and also
uninstalling then reinstalling the Fitbit app to resolve the issue.

The accepted answer here did not work for me. But, I found the solution. I updated the fitbit app in my phone and then tried to re-add the device in my fitbit app again. This time it worked!
