did not work for me, no matter how many times I tapped on brightness. Still on DIM. Really frustrating.

you have to check all the quick settings
there are 4
top left white circle with line in the middle which is do not disturb tap must be off
top right cresent moon sleep mode must be off
bottom left this is the brightness setting set to normal
bottom right is how to look at face of the watch either push button or every movement of the arm
make sure top two settings are off before trying brightness

The brightness is an update problem. As soon as I updated, I am no longer allowed to change screen settings. Only dim. It is "Greyed out" I cannot select or change brightness in settings. There is a thread on it here. So, unless Fitbit makes a change, we have to live with it or get a new one.

Sorry to hear about your watch t mine updated okay I know if the top two quick settings are not off the brightness cannot be altered
one thing you could do is try resetting
you hold the button that on its own on the left and the bottom of the two on the right until the Fitbit symbol appears
or there is a way on line to go back to factory settings
i have only learnt about my ionic through trial and error

Thank you, I did finally get it.
Mine was actually in sleep mode and once I got that turned off, it was okay.
Thank you, I did finally figure that out, but boy did it take awhile.

If you clicked the Do Not Disturb Icon, then your Ionic will have automatically gone to the dimmest brightness setting. Click the Do Not Disturb and it will brighten up to auto setting.

I go to settings and tap brightness but it’s stuck on Dim. It will not change levels. It did this all by itself today - like an independent reboot. I’m about to toss it. I can’t see it when outside.

In settings switch off sleep mode. Then you should be able to adjust display brightness

Hey everyone! Thanks a lot for the troubleshooting tried prior to posting.
Before trying to edit the brightness on your watch, please double check that "Sleep Mode" isn't turned on, as this might be the reason why you're unable to edit it:
When the Sleep Mode setting is on:
- Notifications don't cause the watch to vibrate or the screen to turn on.
- The screen's brightness is set to dim.
- The Always-On Display clock face is turned off.
- Turning your wrist won't cause the watch's screen to turn on.
- You see a Sleep Mode icon at the top of the screen when you swipe up to see your stats.
To turn this setting off, do the following:
- Open the settings app
- Tap Sleep Mode > tap to change it to off
Also, double check the schedule that you have for sleep mode setting.
I'll be around if you have any additional questions.

I understand the directions to get to the settings....My problem, it is so dark, I can't see any of the options!
Awesome help! my ionic some how got into sleep mode. It sure was difficult actually seeing this in order to turn it off and properly adjust the brightness. A suggestion, have engineers make the brightness a mechanical button in order to actually see the readouts. This message board was extremely helpful!!! Thank you so much. I love my Ionic and I am trying to promote all my friends of its health benefits.
peace be with you,
Michael W.

You may be in sleep mode. You must first turn sleep mode OFF, then you will have the option to adjust screen brightness.
