Why my calories are dropping after syncing?

Replies are disabled for this topic. Start a new one or visit our Help Center.

Hi all,

I've noticed that my watch says "1000 burned calories" and then, when syncs with my phone the app updates the calories burned to 1000 for couple of seconds but when it finishes up it heavily decreases to 800 burned calories in the app and also in the watch.

Note that, the number above are examples... It happens everytime I sync with the phone.

How come calories been "downgraded" if is marked as burned already ?

I'm using a Google Pixel.

Cheers

It's nice to see you around the forums @vini1337!  Hmmm... weird huh? I haven't had similar issues so far, but let's try the following:

  • Make sure that your Fitbit app is up-to-date (Android, iOS)
  • Log out of your Fitbit app
  • Force quit the app
  • Restart your tracker
  • Turn off the Bluetooth
  • Shut off your phone and turn it on after 1-2 minutes
  • Turn on the Bluetooth
  • Log back into your Fitbit app

Keep tracking your calories and let me know if after syncing the calories keep dropping. If so, would you mind to attach me pictures of your Fitbit app and tracker with the before and after the sync?

On the other hand, I was wondering if by any chance you haven't manually logged activities? Typically, your data will be recalculated if you manually log an activity as the manually logged activity takes precedence over the data you tracked while wearing your tracker at that point in time. For example, if I am wearing my tracker and walking and I reach 500 calories burned, then I go to the dashboard and manually log an activity that starts and ends at that point in time for say 1 hour, Fitbit will calculate how many calories you burned and it may bring my calorie count to something below 500. To clarify, activities should only be manually logged when you forget to wear your Fitbit.

I'll be around, keep me in the loop!

Thank you very much for replying.

I've tried many times, factory reset the watch, uninstall the app on my phone, logout and login 1000x times and the issue remains.

My wife has the same watch as mine and she runs over an Iphone without any issues. Funny thing is that, we exchange watches so I could debug it and try a few things out and it works as expected on her phone. In a nut shell, it is likely a Android/Pixel syncing issue...

To make life easer, I'll upload a video of me syncing... on the video, please, see on the left my watch with X number of burned cal and in app at the right hand side Y number of burned cal. Once synced, you will see the number is reduced for some unknown reason. It's likely 20 - 50 cal less each sync.  If i change to manual sync, it will be even worse, by diff 200-500 less cal.

I dont need to mentioned that results are a mess in the end of the day...

Pelase, let me know how to proceed

Did you ever get a solution?  my watch said 900 and something after this morning run, but is now showing 600 and something, its also knocked 1300 steps off after last refresh!  I was supposed to be doing 2018 in 2018 this year but no idea if i am near that with all the steps it keeps taking off!

Welcome to the Forums @taffypot.

I'd like to take a closer look at the situation.

Could you take some screenshots of your total calories at a specific time and some of when it goes down? That'd help me better understand what is going on and why. In the meantime, have you tried everything that was suggested on the post above? If not, please do give it a try.

Let me know if there are any other questions.

After i synchronised my fitbit ionic on my samsung galaxy note 8, my calorie burnt  decreased. Initially my calorie burnt was about 1900 shown on my watch, after synchronizing with my phone it dropped to about 1700. I tried reset my watch, restart my phone, however it don't seems to work.

Welcome to the Forums @Ching78.

Thanks for bringing this up. I'd like to take a closer look at what is happening.

Has this happened ever since or before? It is possible that it could've been a one time thing. Additionally, it is also possible that it could've happened because some activity that was already logged on your account was overwritten by data from your Fitbit which led to the calorie count to be decreased.

Let me know if the situation has happened again or if you have any further questions.

Has this been solved yet? It’s happening to me as well and for quite some time now, it would be great if there was a fix 👌🏽

Hi, thought I would ask if anyone has recently experienced a loss of calories post syncing on their device & also  discrepancy in active hours. My Fitbit 3 stated 2400 calories & 9 active hours, yet on syncing my calories dropped to 1900 and according to the app I only had 6/9 hours and have been stationary for 6 hours this morning; whereas my Fitbit states 9/9 hours. Is it the discrepancy in activity which has resulted in the calorie loss. How do I fix the problem? Also noticed I now get the Fitbit icon on syncing & the Fitbit freezes for about 2 minutes after syncing🤔

Same thing is happening to me. I’ve contacted Fitbit customer service directly. I’m hoping to get a response very soon 🤞🏽

Kind regards

The thing happening to me, charge 2 HR + Pixel 2. I've seen it multiple times, latest today.

When I search there are reports from many users going back to at least 2016.

The response from Fitbit is always do a reset, turn Bluetooth of then on, Etc.

One thing I notice that is my reported "calories to go" seens to reflect the original calories burned number even after the drop in calories used.

Hi,

It appears to be a one off incident for me.

I lost 6hrs of active data, the data logged reverted to the standard non-active values, but looking at the graphs there is acknowledgment of ‘stairs’ during this non active period but all other graphs indicate stationary behaviour.

I attempted to turn off my Fitbit & reset the app but then suffered a bluetooth error code, so I have no idea why all is normal now but I will contact Fitbit if the instance repeats itself.

It's funny because I disconnected my ionic syncing a year ago due to this very issue on doesn't doesn't seem like Fitbit is capable of figuring out what's going on.  I just reconnected in the past week and within days it's happening just like it did last year.  I did all the resetting of the watch and upgrading of the BIOS and upgrading of the app and I guess this thing just can't be fixed because you don't have any way to reproduce it.  Not surprisingly I am on an Android phone and it does seem to be an Android issue.  so I'll guess I'll do what I did it again and just disconnect from ever sinking anymore until I get a new watch.  probably not a Fitbit unfortunately because while I like the watch a lot, the sync bug is a deal-breaker.

Hi,

Fortunately for me the issue has resolved and the bug regarding exercise selection appears to have been fixed.

I did a complete reset of the Fitbit charge 3; even removed all the Fitbit apps from the iPhone and iPad and reinstalled. Was a bit of a faff, as there appeared to be a few road blocks but I persevered.

Hope your Fitbit issues resolve

Hello @SunsetRunner, it's good to see you around in the Community forums. I'm sorry to see you've been having trouble with your Ionic and the number of calories being reduced after syncing.

I noticed you mentioned having tried a few troubleshooting steps (restart the watch, and completing updates). Could you please confirm if you've also exhausted all the troubleshooting options mentioned here earlier?

Thank you for this update @HeathOak , it's good to know this has been resolved for you.

Keep me posted.

Thanks for jumping in here @effgeeNote that after linking your accounts you may see some differences in the way data is calculated for your exercises on each site. For more information, see Strava's Calorie Calculation article.

Hope this helps, keep me posted!

I dont use strava and this is happening to me to. Also the GPS is messed up when a normal 7 to 8 mile run on my fitbit( cuz I go the same path sometimes) tracks as 1.50 miles.

I was at around 2200 on my watch and synced it and it minuses 300 calories down to somewhere around 1800 calories. So messed up!

I also havent manually inputted any other runs today or anything. I've been too tired to do much else!

This same thing is happening to me with the Iphone.  It happened a few weeks ago and the following day everything was resolved.  it's happening again today.  My versa did not track my active time on the treadmill this morning and my calories are going backwards.  I've been tracking my day since January 12th, and have certain times in the day where I hit certain goals...it's frustrating as I've tried all of the trouble shooting methods, etc.  mentioned below each time this has happened (this is the third time since January 12th).  I've chalked it up to I'm going to lose one day of my activity, tracking a month...assuming it corrects itself again this time.  This may be it for FitBit for me...after this watch is done, I might be moving on the Apple Watch.  It's discouraging to work so hard and keep track and then have a $200 tracker not work even if for a day.  FitBit needs to figure this out!
