Any diabetics using the FB?

Wondering if there are any diabetics out there who are using the FB and working towards weight loss?  I'm insulin dependent and trying to lose weight but more importantly trying to regain my health and physical strength while balancing everything.  A challenge a day! Love to hear your stories....

Hi

Non T2 diabetics can easily become one that is for sure.

My young niece in her 30s did just that by eating high carb diet, not exercising and now she is on metformin. I'm hoping that she will get really active and lose weight and reverse the process. I think that after a long period of lower bad carbs and sugars the cells can get less insulin resistant so that with weight loss the T2 can resolve. Of course, going back to over eating and bad junk food you can quickly make yourself sick again.

Keep at it. Move toward health. The complications like kidney failure and dementia risk suck big time to be blunt about it.

I think it takes years for the cells not to be somewhat insulin resistant. But heck why not say I'm cured and still do the same healthy food and exercise regime. We may be cured for life and feel great about it. Then if the disease returns due to some other illness or high stress well maybe we can reverse it again!

It is all about what works for us to stay healthy once we get there. We get to choose how we think about it. Dr Joel Fuhrman, MD thinks it can be cured. He wrote End to Diabetes book.

I was diagnosed with type 2 six years ago. At the time my A1c results came back as too high to be measurable. I had high blood pressure, high cholesterol, high triglycerides, and I was 40 lbs overweight.

I exercised 3 hours every day, and didn't really change my diet. I added juicing vegetables once a day to my daily routine.
My a1c has been below 5.7 for the last 18 months without medication. I lost 48 lbs. My blood pressure and all of my blood work is normal. I no longer take any medication, and now I just exercise for 20 minutes three times a day. I'm 64 years old and I feel great.

My doctor told me I would be on medication for the rest of my life. I told him that I wouldn't.

Exercise is more important than diet. If your health is so bad that you cannot physically exercise then you almost have to become a vegan to reverse type 2 diabetes. The type 2 cure is within everyone's grasp with a change in exercise, diet, or both. Exercising three times a day for 20 minutes is better than exercising 1 hour during one session.

Good luck to all!!

Hi I'm new here, just started actually. I'm a 37 year old female that's been type 1 for 32 years.  I am on insulin pump but I've been neglecting my health.  It's really bad.  My last 1AC test was 11.7.... YES, 11.7!!! I'm trying to get back to exervisinig and eating healthy, praying that fitbit helps and the community.  i really need the motivation.  Good luck my fellow sweet honeys (that's what I call anyone with diabetes :-).

That is very inspiring!  I am a picky eater so I don't want to change my diet, but if I can reverse having to take meds and all by working out  often, that would be amazing.  Going to put my best effort in!

Hello I was diagnosed with Type 2 in January and it has changed my life, actually for the better, since the day they told me, I've changed everything I eat, I exercise every single day and drink plenty of water.  I gues what got me was I'd rather not eat carbs and sweets and be able to see and walk...I guess you gotta look at it as a very serious disease.  It's about changing your whole life, insulin is so much more serious, type 1 is rough, but you can control it just by controlling what goes in your mouth and exercising and drinking the water..good luck with your fitbit, you can change and do this....

It is all in the lifestyle changing.

HI Laura,

I am diabetic, depends on which doctor I am seeing as what I am called (1.5 or 2)  I found a web site and got involved with "diabetic sisters"  They help females navagate the maze of diabetes for females, and have some great ideas for living daily with it.  I have a fitbit that I got because on of my doctors wanted me to track exercise, think it was Feb.  Anyhow I am down 72 lbs since last Septtmber, but it is not easy!  And at the moment I am stuck at 180 lbs.  Seems nothing - nothing is getting it to move.  I usually do water arobics twice a week and try to walk the days I don't make it to water arobics.  Been told to slow down because of having A-fib right now.  So I am not real happy at the moment.   Marigold

Great job! You must be really watching your calories as well. Right?

I am pre-diabetic and due for a blood test. I am 180 as well and lost weight down from 200lbs.after surgery. It does get challenging as you try to keep going down. I use MFP my fitness pal.to track my foods.I teach in the water which is comparable to water aerobics. I will be more active this week with more classes starting. Sometimes you have to change your activity to a little more cardio. My goal is to break into the 170 weight range. I have to steer away from oxalates foods since I have a kidney stone. Just another challenge.

hi, I am a type 2 diabetic and have been using the fitbit charge for about 2 months now.  I find that it is a great help.  I never recorded what i ate and rarely excercised.  It has helped motivate me to watch what i eat and to start excercising.  i am currently walking at least a mile a day and have lost approx 13 lbs to date.  Also, my fasting sugar numbers have gone down significantly.

Type 1 for just over a year (April 22). I'm already active and in good shape but having a fitbit makes exercising more fun and engaging.

Hi.  I'm a type 1 diabetic.  I've been insulin dependent since the age of 12 and I'm now 48.  I use an insulin pump.  I lost 100 pounds naturally in one year and now using the fitbit to help me lose the last 20 pounds.

Keep doing what you are doing to be successful and ask for friends to challenge you. You have the idea nice and slow maybe 1 lbs a week.

Hi,

I'm 28 yoa and have been a diabetic for 18 yrs. It hasn't been easy having type 1 diabetes since the age of 10.

I just started using FitBit to better monitor my movement and eating, but I still struggle with watching what I eat. As well to better my A1C because it's always been in the high range. Never seen anything below a 10 on my results. Would love any recipes and ideas on how to better my life. I've had family members pass because they didn't take care of it. I have 7 siblings and a niece and nephew to live for.

Any help will do. Thank you!

After years of being borderline diabetic, I crossed the line about a month ago. Bought my Fitbit several days later. Exercise is still hard for me, but I'm watching what I eat and logging it, and I've lost 13.4 pounds this past month! My primary goal is to get off the injectables because I hate it, and get generally healthy.

At least you recognize you have a serious A1C level and needs to be worked on. I have been up to 8 and my doctor wasn’t happy with me.
Now it is around 6.0 and she still wants to lower it. It is work to keep on top of it. And it is all up to you . Maybe you are having your aha moment
and things will get turned around.

Buy an IPod or something you can listen to music and get out and walk. Go the block and keep adding on each day. I am not one to ask people to
go with me. I just get tired of the excuses people have so I gave up and go on my own. I hate going to gyms.

Did your doctor ask you to take a class with diabetes? Most insurance companies will pay for it or even have programs that are free. I went to
4 or 5 of them and they were very helpful.

Your reward will be the next A1C test . And if you need to lose weight that is a big reward too. You didn’t say if you are over weight.
I have cousins that are thin and have diabetes so sometimes it isn’t the weight factor. For me it was the cause. So I finally got real
serious about weight in the last few years.

Good luck and keep us all inform how you are doing. Don’t give up. We all have been there on this list.

I hate to cook so I have no real recipes to share.

Thanks! Just like you I don't like asking others. More so because they go ahead of me or just aren't as motivated. And weight is a little factor. I have 20 extra pounds on me that make me borderline obese. So I have a lot against me now. I enjoy cooking but hate the grocery trips and trying to think of what to cook.
Again thanks for the encouragement and I will keep you all posted on my progress.
