For all my Chats, Challenges & Laughs peeps! Since we can't get on the threads I thought I would start a discussion area for us. We may not be able to keep track of points standings easily but we can still talk.

I miss you!

Hi Everyone,

We seem to all be a bit quiet of late.

I'm still doing WW but for a couple of weeks I struggled.  I have still lost 25lbs over the 12 weeks so I am pleased about that, but I have got to get more routines put in place.

My brother & I had out first Astra Zeneca jabs.  It took me a few days to get over the tiredness and my joints (which already are quite painful) were really playing me up.  Roy felt the same but he also had a slight fever and body chills.  He took a day or two more than me to get over it.  August 6th is when we are having the next jabs.

My brother is currently not working, he was doing casual work for a good company but they only needed him for a few weeks.  He was offered work at another place but after working there for two days contacted his agency & told them he was not available (we then went and got the jabs).  He said the second place and no idea of OH&S, the toilets were disgusting and people ignored any warning signs.  As a forklift operator you have to be careful.  He rang his agency & told him he wont be available until June.  That will enable him to take Mum to the dentist this week had have her Astra Zeneca jab next week.

We have been very busy.  We had to have a new fence put up, get our land line fixed, pull down some of our rotary hoist (as several lines broke after we put out the washing).  We have been doing a massive spring clean (although we are in autumn).  Once a year our council has a "home detox" where you can take unwanted household & garden chemicals.  You can take up to a car boot load.  We took Dad's car as his boot is much bigger than Roy's.  Dad had so many bottles of stuff (many of which he had not even opened & some of the expiry dates were years ago) in the garage and shed we don't even think he would have known what half the stuff was for.  Mum feels much better that all this stuff is off the property.

I was in the process of organising a dinner with the women I used to work with.  We used to try to get together two or three times a year but with the covid lockdowns and closures we haven't seen each other since November 2019.  We were trying to organise a Friday evening in May when one of my friends Jane contacted me to tell me her Mother had died suddenly after a complication following a fall, the next day Monica contacts me to tell me her Mother has a suspected brain tumor after suffering a stroke.  So it has been a sad time.

I hope that we don't all lose contact.  I know I don't come on here as much as I should, I will try to write more often (put it into a routine!).  I love hearing about everyone's lives.  Especially, as I live in Australia and although we speak the same language and ostensibly started our countries in a similar fashion we can be quite different at times and extremely similar at other times.

I hope everyone is fine and well and that all loved ones are well.

Good to hear from you, @Jan2512 .  Wondering if your fall has been pleasant; especially when it's been in the 80's here (I prefer the 60's) and we've been trying to get this yard under control.  We went through a dry spell and when it rained finally the grass grew inches overnight.  We mow (mainly hubby) well over 5 acres, trying to get fields to look more like lawn.  Then there's the weed 'wacking' around everything.  Unfortunately, right along the driveway and next to the house is a almost straight up and down incline that needs to be mowed.  We are too old to do it even with a heavy duty walk behind weed cutter.  Today he is trying to make extension arms or something so he can 'ease' it down the hill while staying on top.  So, on a more positive note, I am SO happy for your weight loss.  Stay the course, girl!  I am still choosing food over health.  I can be on track for 5 days or so and then I get into crazy eating / high volume junk.  I feel so much better when I eat healthy.  For some reason, I go for the moments of taste eating instead of the hours of feeling good.  Go figure.

Had gotten way off track by really overeating daily and not even getting my water in which normally isn't a problem.  So, I started again, for the third time, as Day 1 on the Lose It app.  Day 1 was successful.  Hope to hear from everyone.

Thanks for the encouragement @CJ_Here.  I am trying to be good but lately I am feeling stressed and I reach for something tasty.  I did try to get back into my exercises but after one good session on Friday I was unable to follow up due to appointments and day out then on Tuesday I don't know what happened to my right arm but I was in a lot of pain and had limited mobility.  I managed to book a physio appt for Thursday.  This morning when I woke up I noticed I had more movement and the pain was a lot less, but I'm still going to the physio.

On Saturday I took my Mum to and exhibition at a manor house.  The house is at the Ripponlea Estate.  It has been used as a period house for the TV series "The Miss Fisher Murder Mysteries" and then for the film version.  The exhibition was mostly of the clothes and props from the film.  It was only a small exhibition, but Mum hasn't really been anywhere for the last few months so I thought she'd like to get away from the house.

Victoria (my state) is possible going to go back into lockdown.  We have 15 active cases, all from someone how flew to Adelaide from India and caught covid in hotel quarantine in Adelaide - which is the capital of South Australia.  We were supposed to have most of our restrictions lifted by the middle of June however, we now have to wear masks in all indoor places including your own home if you have visitors or tradespeople to your house.  Roy (my brother) is putting off for another week contacting his agency for work.  At least Mum, Roy & I have all had our first dose of Astra Zeneca.

I hope everyone is okay it seems to be getting a little lonely here!

Day 2 of re-start was a success!  Feeling really achy today.  Did some weed pulling yesterday but may be due more to go from 80 yesterday to low 30's overnight and may be only a high of 54 today.  Took some advil and hope to loosen up soon as we need to get the future bathroom painted before the contractor shows up.

Yes, @Jan2512 , it's feeling really lonely here.  I've been contemplating not showing up anymore.  Maybe the end is near or here.  Hope not, but all good things must end.

CJ and Jan, Please don't abandon the site.  I didn't want to feel like a butt-insky but am interested in your comments, partly because I'm a little lonely except for online friends mostly probably.  My husband and I moved to Houston for cancer medical care and of course didn't get involved in anything where we would have gotten acquainted or made friends here.  Stanley died in 2007.

I read a comment about diet that made me laugh but is serious....I'm not supposed to be eating continuously.!!!   LOL  I seem to do that somedays.   I have just about concluded the key to controlling our weight might be to work hard at finding some lower calorie food that we really enjoy eating.  I do buy the lowest calorie ice cream (100 calories for 2/3 cup) but frozen blueberries and fat free greek yogurt is not a bad example.  It is a little more trouble but I bet we all enjoy some vegetables quite a lot except that they are a bit more trouble.  Do we just need to plan ahead more.  I like brussels sprouts.  I have some instructions on how to cook them tapped on my wall near my oven.  I'm a hopeless cook.  I have had some carrots in my fridge for about a month and can't think of what to do with them.  Good thing they last forever.  Right?

I forgot to say,  I used to walk on my treadmill every day for 40 minutes, (5,000 steps).  That habit fell by the wayside.  Now I'm trying to get back to it by adding a few more minutes each day.  Yesterday I did 24 minutes.  Pathetic.  But I do think exercise every day for decades has kept me in excellent health even though I don't think it helps at all with weight control.  I also do hours of yard work.  Being active is supposed to keep your brain healthy I read this morning.  I have many clumping bamboo plants in my yard that froze to the ground in February which I have been cutting down.  I'm almost done but the hot weather has definitely already appeared.  Horrible, in subtropical south Houston Texas.  96% humidity this morning but better in the afternoon even if hotter.

Hello online friends! My apologies for being MIA for SOOOOO long. I have been reading your posts diligently, but haven't made the time to sign on to the site and post. I think, like so many things, I started to take for granted that this community would always exist. I can't promise that I will post every day, but I'm thinking I'm at that point in my journey where I need to add something new (ok revive an old habit) to help me remain accountable and moving in the right direction toward a healthier (mind and body) me.

@Glenda Thank you for posting and motivating me to "come back"

@CJ_Here Good for you on not giving up on yourself and being willing to restart. That shows true resilience. Your determination reminds me of a quote I read several years ago by a Weight Watchers Leader (that I printed out and had posted at my desk): "Perfection is the enemy of the good. You don't need to do this perfectly, you just need to do it the best that you can. And it's never about the moment when you eat the cookies - we ALL have that moment- it's actually about the next moment. It's about how quickly you can forgive yourself and move forward and accept that not being perfect is part of this journey". ~ Lisa Levy Shaub

@Jan2512 I'm so glad that you are here. As much as you enjoy learning about how things are here in the US, I enjoy hearing about how things are in Australia. For example, when you wrote about the level of concern due to 15 cases of COVID in your state, I realized that here, it seems to be "old news". By comparison, the last time I looked earlier this week, my township had recorded over 100 cases in the last 30 days. As a point of reference, it's 28 square miles and is one of 50+ townships in our county. There are 67 counties in my state of Pennsylvania! The other thing that was fascinating to me is the length of time between your first jab and your second. The Astra Zeneca shot is not available in the US. I got my first dose of the Moderna shot on May 5 and will be getting my second dose next week.

I am still working at home. While some of our offices will be opening up on a pilot basis in early June, it's purely on a voluntary basis and I saw that less than 150 people volunteered - that works out to less than 15 people per office (if they are distributed evenly). While a few of the offices that are opening are fairly small, at least three of them are regional home offices with hundreds of employees. I learned yesterday that my office will be opening in mid-July - also on a voluntary basis. We need to register to be part of this next phase of "return to office" within the next two weeks. I know I won't be going back 5 days a week, but haven't decided whether to go back for 2 days or 3 so don't think I will be volunteering just yet. My daughter has essentially taken over the use of my car, so it will be much easier to continue to let her have full use of it until she leaves for college in the fall.

We have been busy with preparations for her end of school activities. Although she missed out on so many of the normal senior year traditions, her school is having a prom and she will have an outdoor in-person graduation ceremony. When they were first talking about plans for graduation a few months ago, they were thinking they would need to split the class in half and have two ceremonies so that each graduate could have two guests rather than just one with a single ceremony. Thanks to capacity restrictions being lifted, she can now have up to five guest in attendance!!

Ok now that I've "earned" my posting point for today, maybe I'll be more motivated to earn the other 4 and come back tomorrow and post the results of my efforts.

I admit that I gave up - on the group and myself. Thank you all for pulling me back in.

Most recently, I‘ve had a sinus infection which ruptured my eardrum early Saturday morning. Fortunately I was already on an antibiotic and finished a packet of steroids. And as a bonus, the medicine has made me dry mouthed so I have been craving water and fresh foods.

As far as the pandemic is concerned, our county is almost back to normal. I still wear a mask when I go into a store but it’s not required. Almost all our restaurants have been open for a few months. Our church is no longer blocking off pews but our congregation is small enough it’s not a problem. We are in the midst of a major conflict at church and I believe that’s contributing to my depression.

I had my second dose of the Pfizer vaccine three weeks ago. Next week, my doctor wants me to have a tetanus shot, then two weeks later, a shingles vaccine.

I will make an effort to post most weekdays.

Okay everyone, seeing this talk of abandoning our group has inspired me to chime in again after just posting earlier in the week. I think it would be a mistake to let it slip away. Those of us that do come here do see value in it. I think some of us need to try just a bit harder to put in what we take out. I'm including myself in that group. I need to get back into a routine.

But, I also wonder if maybe we should try to contact some of our former members - maybe that we connected with from our teams - and send them the link here and let them know we've moved but we haven't quit. It's possible as many are starting to come out of the pandemic, they've forgotten about us and the fact that we aren't where we used to be means when they tried to find us they couldn't? Some additional contributors would really help every one of us and them. Also, we can invite any of our real life friends who might benefit as well?

On that same note, this group was started by a group of friends - Tami, Gayle and a few others . . . does anyone stay in touch with the founders in challenges or otherwise?

Elaine,  I'm so glad you are getting a shingles shot.  Shingles are TERRIBLE...TERRIBLE.    I had 3 shingles shots and still got shingles but I'm convinced they would have been worse without the shots.   I googled and asked "I have shingles, what id the best I can hope for?"  they said 2 weeks of misery.  That is what I had .

@MargaretG139welcome back again! It's good to hear from you!

Okay, so I did some more thinking on this and I think one of the things that I really enjoyed from the previous forum was the "silent sunday" meditations or discussions and also the weekly challenge centered on some kind of topic that we could all reply to. So with that in mind, maybe we can start that up again. It's not Sunday today but for us in the US, it is heading into a holiday weekend so . . . here's my question:

With Memorial Day picnics and the start of summer, many of us will be tempted to splurge a little this weekend. What is one behavior or healthful tip that you plan to employ to prevent a diet disaster from occurring?

And, now for my answer:

Our pool is also opening on Saturday in the neighborhood so I plan to walk there each day this weekend and do some swimming. It will feel like an exercise treat since it's been so long that I've been able to do that AND between the heat we've had all of a sudden and the being outdoors, I'm favoring fruits and salads - colder foods with juicy or crunchy textures like tomato/cuke salad and chunks of watermelon so that's what I plan to snack on before I get hungry enough to make a bad decision.

Hi All, just a quick update as I am on my phone & I don't like not having a proper keyboard.

I am so pleased you want to keep the group going, maybe we can look at some challenges etc over the coming weeks.

Victoria is in lockdown again for seven days.  We are only allowed out for five reasons - essential work, medical, exercise up to two hours per day, care giving & shopping for essentials (in Australia that includes alcohol & lottery) and getting the jab.  We can only travel 5 km from our house (a bit under 3 miles) and must wear a mask outside our homes.

We had some good news only 4 new covid cases overnight taking our total to 26 cases (out of a pop of 6.5 million).

So much for a short note LOL.  Take care everyone 🙃

Four days down with staying within my calories.  Short on water today since we were busy all day putting flooring in the future bathroom and then mowing our property.  Great to hear from so many.  Thanks for getting us started on some structure, @Katrin .

With Memorial Day picnics and the start of summer, many of us will be tempted to splurge a little this weekend. What is one behavior or healthful tip that you plan to employ to prevent a diet disaster from occurring?  Tomorrow, Friday, I will be going for an overdue annual physical and planned to go grocery shopping.  Had I not seen this question, I may have very well just bought a lot of treats.  I am going to keep this question in mind while I'm in the store.  And, I commit to report back on my grocery haul.  I will choose healthy foods and I will stay away from 'the fluff'.

I don't have a special Memorial Day plan, but I plan to correct my  grocery shopping deficient behavior.  Last trip I didn't even go into the produce department.

You might all want to google "how to be 3 years younger, physically in 8 weeks compared to your friends.  Dr. Kara Fitzgerald's study "Methylation diet and lifestyle"  reduces your age 2 years while your friends will be getting 1.27 years older. The most important  of the sleep, exercise, and breathing to relax and diet program is the diet.  It is notably low carb, restricting all grains, beans, diary and added sugar..  It is also time restricted to no eating between 7 PM and 7 AM .  Exercise was only 30 minutes 5 days a week & sleep 7 hours per night, and a breathing exercise 2 times a day 20 minutes to elicit relaxation response,   Would you like to be 3 years younger physically?  If you google you can get all the details if the diet.

We had planned to camp at our “farm” (4acres just a few miles from our house), with an extended family cookout late Saturday. Unfortunately it has been raining for two days and while Saturday should be sunny, the ground will be marshy and unfit to mow. I had planned to clean the camper yesterday, pushed it to today, and am still procrastinating. It won’t take more than an hour to wipe down all the surfaces so I will push myself to go this afternoon.

I had already done my weekend shopping before your question so I do have a few splurges. I intend to have at least one bratwurst! Hubby’s siblings are bringing salad, fruit, and veggies, but I delegated the sweets to my MIL. Hopefully we can focus more on visiting than eating. There will definitely be a “cornhole” tournament. That’s tossing cloth bags filled with corn onto a board with a hole in it.

The spring mix lettuce in a pot on my deck has been supplying me with plenty of greens. I hate buying it in the store because it seems like it goes bad before I even get home! Now I step onto the deck, cut what I need, wash it, and either have a salad or use it in a wrap. I’m ready for my tomato plants to start producing but that’s still a ways off even though they’re growing well. I have also harvested some dill, and should have basil and oregano soon.

5 points for Thursday

In response to @Katrin 's question: With Memorial Day picnics and the start of summer, many of us will be tempted to splurge a little this weekend. What is one behavior or healthful tip that you plan to employ to prevent a diet disaster from occurring?

While we don't have any plans this weekend, one of the things I've learned is don't go to a picnic, BBQ (or other event where you know there will be potentially unhealthy / high calorie food) hungry. Don't skip meals and have a filling healthy snack before you go. If you are contributing to the food, bring something low calorie / healthy so that you'll know there will be at least one option that won't derail you. As @ElaineJ27 said, make visiting and playing games (rather than eating) the focus. Beware of alcohol - not only is it high in calories in and of itself, but the more you drink, the less you'll care = the more you're likely to eat. Finally, the MOST important thing is what you do AFTER the event. If you've overindulged, forgive yourself and move on. Tomorrow is a new day and an opportunity for a new beginning.

At my virtual WW workshop this morning, after talking about how we celebrate successes and have a tendency to beat ourselves up over obstacles (self imposed or otherwise), the coach ended with the following quote "a step backward after a step forward is not a setback - it's the cha-cha!" : )

Stayed within calories today, but due to fasting for blood work and then running errands in town, I did not eat until late afternoon.  So, almost all daily calories consumed in an hour's time.  My stomach was not happy.  It re-affirms that intermittent fasting is not a good thing for me.  I tend to overeat which then leads to binging.  But, I did stay within my calories so I am happy.  As far as my grocery haul, it was OK.  I had gone to Target first and looked too long at the chips that they so strategically place and saw some I had never seen / tried before; AND, you HAD to buy three bags to get the deal (I probably saved myself .10 by spending at extra $6, LOL.  Anyway, after that I didn't even want to try the grocery store but needed a few staples so I took a deep breath and entered.  I would have gotten some watermelon but it looked overripe to me.  I did get some salad green.  I almost bought a container of my favorite type of cookie, but resisted.  In whole, I did not purchase any trigger foods.  I did not purchase "the fluff".  Thank goodness Hubby had run to town and picked up a chocolate treat, LOL; which I did have one of with coffee.  I only ate one serving of the chips.  When I walked into the grocery store, I did remind myself of my goal.  I call this trip a success 🙂
