I'll be 63 on the 21st of this month. Years ago, I was very badly injured in an auto accident. I suffered broken bones, torn muscles, broken teeth, a dislocated jaw, hearing loss, tendon damage, and a traumatic brain injury that resulted in disorientation, memory loss, difficulty speaking, difficulty sleeping, and ADD. In addition to all of that, I spent the next 8.5 years battling the constant pain of fibromyalgia. Between lack of exercise during my lengthy recovery and medications that contributed to weight gain, I packed on a lot of excess weight. Switching to mostly raw, alkaline foods, had a dramatic effect on my blood pressure and my fibromyalgia pain. Once my body didn't hurt all over, I was able to start walking for exercise. It was difficult because by that time my muscles were like Jello. Nevertheless, I have lost 20 lbs. I have another 60 lbs. to go. I live in the country, don't belong to a gym, and don't have any exercise buddies. That's why I'm here.

I am 63 and just got my fitbit in July for my birthday. I have lost 5 lbs but now that school has started again I have not time to walk on a daily basis. I am either too tired or it is quite late. and I can't walk in the morning or I would be getting up atg 4 am. Frustration!

(I'm 71.) Hurray for your weight loss! When I first got back to consistent walking a few years ago, I took my break time at work (15 min 2X a day, plus part of lunch time) to walk. I knew I would never form a habit if I waited for the right time to walk: I had to make time, just as one would make time for brushing one's teeth. My primary goal was to form the habit of walking, so I walked rain or shine. We were fortunate to have a path around the perimeter of the campus that was good for this activity. I haven' t looked back. Since then I have retired, so time is not so much of an issue: I joined the YMCA where I take regular group classes, got a Fitbit, etc. I also find that I feel better for having moved; the only time I have any pain is when I sit for too long! Good luck to you in establishing a walking habit.

Hi All,
I am reading some wonderful inspiring posts here. This group is "older", but we're some tough cookies and we're going to do this. Right? I just discovered that the college in my little rural town has a program for senior citizens. The cost is only $25 per year. Who knew? They certainly don't advertise it. Seniors can audit any college courses, providing there's room, without additional cost. They offer all kinds of courses and I noticed that the physical fitness courses, included Zumba, Zumba Gold, yoga, and water aerobics. How awesome is that? Seriously, check into these things. I'm feeling like a kid again!

Good for you! We are lucky to be near a YMCA that offers Silver Sneakers classes, which are free if you have the right Medicare supplement insurance. My husband isn't Medicare eligible yet, but I've been going to the Y for free for a year or so. There are many private gyms that also offer Silver Sneakers memberships, so please check into it. You can Google the term Silver Sneakers and learn more about this terrific program...

Hey Susiebee44,
Thanks for the information. I hadn't heard of Silver Sneakers. Not sure it will apply to me since I'm 63 and not yet Medicare eiligible, but I Googled is, as you suggested and did come up with one local gym that offers it. I messaged them on Facebook, just to be sure that the information is still accurate. Off for my morning walk now. Hope you have a wonderful day.

Good for you! I too am a fan of Tai Chi. I grew up in downtown San Francisco, where there were many free things to do and Tai Chi was very common. Not so in rural Oklahoma. After a near-fatal auto accident, I used Tai Chi at home by myself to aid in my recovery. It helped with balance, coordination, and every day I pushed to do just a little bit more. That's what's neat about videos and Fitbit tracking. You can actually see your progress.

I must confess that I fell off the wagon (HARD) at Thanksgiving and haven't managed to get back on track. Rain, cold weather, having company, and letting spouse talk me out of walking, I've given into ALL of those excuses and more. I need to lose 60 lbs. and I am counting on folks like you to help me stay motivated. Let's do this together.

You inspire me! I live a fairly isolated existence out in the country. Not much going on around here except walking and the occassional exercise video. Not the best thing for my health. I'm counting on my online friends to help me stay motivated.
