Another week of steady progress on all fronts. It’s exactly three months since I started my current diet (or rather: way of eating) and switched to a new weight training program. That’s in fact 13 weeks and this phase was supposed to last for 12 weeks. However, I’ll continue for one more week (so 14 weeks in total), as I was entirely off-plan for one week at the end of October.

All in all, I’m very satisfied with the new approach and I can see a clear improvement on body composition. This is BF% for the three months prior to the new diet:

2017-12-11_0847.png

and these are the past three months:

2017-12-11_0851.png

Consistency in eating and training clearly yields results, and I would likely have had a nice straight line without the aforementioned interruption.

@EmjayH you are such an inspiration to me! As a loyal fan, I'm going to adopt your mini-goal of 70kg (154 lbs) by Christmas.

My weight loss this past week was down 😍 and then up and slightly down again, which I'll attribute to 2 pieces of cake served to me at a party (would have been rude to not accept 😇). Meeting the trainer at the gym today so curious if their scale matches the readings on my Aria.

@Jotex: your trendline still points vertiginously down! Btw, have you noticed that your weight usually goes up when you have non-weighing days (gray data points)? And that the more consecutive data points there are, the bigger the increase is? I also see this all the time.

Yes, I am motivated that it is still going down, but disappointed that it didn’t dip further this week. About those gray data points, time for true confessions. If the weight goes up even half a pound, I delete it because I find it so demotivating! I am afraid to regain weight I’ve lost because of past failed attempts, so don’t accept readings that indicate ‘failure’. My weight loss should have been greater this week, but it started up the slippery slope! 😱 {I know, the slope usually goes down, but in this case, for me, it goes up... the scale.} Thanks for your feedback - it helps!

Last week I wrote about how I was frustrated about not losing after being disciplined for 3 weeks. This week I am only down a pound, but I think I can see a difference since 4 weeks ago so I bet I gained muscle. I haven't been in the 140s since summer of 2016, but would love to get there soon.

@Daves_Not_Here what do you mean by "replacing "increase strength and fitness" behaviors with "lose weight" behaviors"? Do you mean maybe doing more cardio or taking more steps rather than weights or do you mean focusing more on eating? Or both?

@Dominique I have been maintaining my weight for about 2 years with a dip two summers ago when I tried this diet where I cut down calories but increased protein to what I now think was probably an excessive number of grams, but I went back to where I normally am when I stopped counting calories. I have never gone above 157, but it is really hard to get below 150 for me. In terms of steps per day, I am taking about 12K every day.

I am a bit worried about when I eventually hit my goal of 145 like I did 2 years ago if I can maintain that without counting calories any more. I am also concerned about whether my body will get used to the lower number of calories I am eating right now (I averaged 1300 this week for a 1 pound loss but am going to stick to 1400 to 1500 normally). Does anyone have knowledge about this?

@Ideasforyou -  nice job on the loss this week.  I was eating between 1500 and 2500 cal/day over the past year as went from 200lbs to 160 lbs.  I’ve been at 160 for about 3 months now while eating between 2500 and 3000, so it is not necessarily the case that your body will get used to the lower calorie input.

Listen to a good pod cast recently addressing intuitive eating strategies for losing maintain and even gaining weight.  It is definitely worth a listen to help to learn the strategies for maintaining a lowered weight without counting calories forever.  Here is a link to the first episode.

Hi everyone!

Wow.  I can't believe it's been so long since I posted. 🙂 Here's an update.

USW:  224.5 (07/06/16)

CSW:  147.5 (Thursday, 07/06/17) -77.0

PW:  143.2 (12/01/17); BM 21.2; BF% 26.0; TW 142.5

PW:  143.0 (12/08/17); BMI 21.2; BF% 25.9; TW 143.0

PW:  143.0 (12/15/17); BMI 21.2; BF% 25.8; TW 142.3

Goal:  Maintain between 145.0 - 150.0

With the crazy holiday season upon us I haven't been posting as I should.  I have been lurking around in the background checking up on everyone's progress though.  I have somehow managed to maintain a reasonable weight range the past few weeks -- shocking with all I've been eating!

I did a virtual 10k "Turkey Trot" during Thanksgiving weekend and have been joining some of the "challenges" on Fitbit so that has kept me going.  I also went to my first Zumba class a couple of weeks ago.  Unfortunately I was sick last week and didn't go but I plan to go again tomorrow. In the meantime I did get a Zumba for beginners DVD which I have been doing in the mornings to try and learn some of the steps.  I definitely have two left feet!!  If laughing helps burn calories I should be down quite a bit!! 🙂  But either way it is fun and gets me out of the house.

Have a great week everyone!

I was cat sitting at a friend’s place in downtown Helsinki for three days last week. This disrupted my normal schedule (no weight training, less walking, eating out ) and showed up on the scale as an increase of almost 1 kg after being back home:

2017-12-18_0923.png

I really need to work on my self-restrain skills when I’m outside my familiar home environment.

Anyway, today is the first day I officially switch to eating at a surplus, after 11.5 months spent in a deficit (albeit a very mild one most of the time):

 2017-12-18_0932.png

I went from 67.4  to 60.1 kg (148 to 132 lbs). The last time I was at that weight was in my early 20’s (I’m now 56).

Body fat % went from 18.5 to 13.1%:

2017-12-18_0936.png

Getting leaner (as opposed to only lighter) was my main goal, so I’m quite happy with this. My waist circumference went from 85 to 79 cm, so it appears to be more or less 1 cm off for every percentage of BF.

I now plan to regain weight at no more than 0.5 kg per week in average. I’d like not to exceed 64 kg or 16% BF, whichever comes first. Training-wise I’ll continue my current weight lifting programme: five days a week, focus on hypertrophy. Hopefully I’ll see positive changes in body composition (minimal fat gains, maximal muscle gains).

My weight has gone up, not due to cat sitting like @Dominique, but I also need more self discipline. Cookies, mulled wine and Christmas chocolates {Swiss have the best! 🙄} have snuck into my diet (along with more starchy carbs). But worse than that!!! : The predicted date I’d reach my goal weight has gone from April to October. 😬 So, it’s back to a strict keto diet for me. 🤐

When I got on the scale this morning and saw the number, I almost fell off.  How did I gain 3 lbs this week?! My first thought was "There's no way I'm posting this!" But I realize I have to stay grounded in reality and then began to think of what happened this week...

Although I worked out 4 days and continued my daily walks, I didn't do any meal prep which means I left my nutrition to chance. There was also the Christmas party with decadent deserts, a little alcohol and not nearly enough water. I'm also feeling very bloated and am expecting (sorry fellas) my cycle to start within a week. So, I won't beat myself up but I will acknowledge you can't outrun your fork. So, today's plan is meal replacement shakes (Optavia 5 & 1 even though I haven't used them in a few months) at least 3 liters of water and laundry (because that got neglected this past week too) 🙂

I am grateful to all of you for the support and encouragement you offer here and I'm happy to be part of this community.  Have a wonderful day everyone!

I haven't posted in a while as I thought my posts were getting a bit redundant but I figured I should check in for accountability around the holidays.  I am still hovering around the same weight but sometimes I can tell when I am being a little too indulgent.  I need to tighten up during the week a little as we have a number of gatherings this weekend and I don't want to have any regrets.

Best Answer

@Dominique - Yes, my body seems to have become enamored with 159/160 over the past several months.  I feel good at this weight!  It wasn't always so ... looking back at the 4 years before 2017, about half of it was bouncing around 190, with the other half transitioning to 180 + or - 5 lbs.  And then 2017 looks like I fell off a cliff from January - August before finding the new settling point.

Screen Shot 2017-12-18 at 1.35.55 PM.pngI still plan to follow @WavyDavey's advice and "eat!" and will aim to bulk up to 170; then probably cut back down to 160/165 or so.  Part the reason I've had no movement to past two weeks is because I stopped lifting as part of a scheduled deload that I extended to give my shoulder some time to heal up. No point in trying to gain weight if you're not lifting, as you don't grow muscle -- just fat.  (Plus having a cold makes it harder to eat when you aren't hungry).  But I was back in the gym today (back and pulling work) and will map out my schedule for the next 8 weeks to the next deload.  The shoulder is still not right, though, so I'm trying work around it.
