@Daves_Not_Here I can honestly say I have never stalled or platued during my weight loss phase. Not once. I steadily lost because I was vigilant about what was going in. I realize if weight loss didn't stall the debate would not exist but I am very skeptical that it happens as quick as some say. I do believe the last 5 or 10 could be difficult, but for some it happens six weeks in. Not possible without a true medical reason

So, 17 days alcohol free.  I am seeing my resting heart rate drop and I am a little lighter but that may just be normal fluctuation.  I will be curious to see if I shave a little weight in the next couple of weeks.  Other than that, I don't feel much different but it's good to move health in the right direction.

No change at all in the last week. I’m starting to think I’ve been dieting for too long for my own good:

Even if the weight loss has been rather small, 11 months is still long. I only have three weeks to go on the current diet, so I’ll try to push calories a bit lower and drop some more, but if I end up maintaining, I’ll take that. Already looking forward to massing in January, but I’d like to start as lean as possible.

@Dominique -- when you mass, what weight will you target?  And what changes in nutrition and activity will you make to get there?

@emili -- I've been thinking about stalls since I went out on a limb and expressed my skepticism about them a few days ago.  I can see a couple of scenarios where they might be reasonably be expected - (1) someone who has low body fat percentage is trying to lose weight and gain strength at the same time, and (2) someone who is insulin resistant is trying to lose weight and resist strong hunger cravings at the same time.

But for someone like me with high body fat who can lose 50 pounds and still be obese, I see no reason why I should expect to hit a stall halfway through.

I am back! I have discovered that I have arthritis at the base of my spine and can't work out for the rest of the year so this holiday season is going to be a challenge. I need the accountability that this group provides to get me back on track and keep me there.

@Daves_Not_Here: my aim will be to gain an average of 0.5% of body weight per week. Starting at 60 kg, that would be 0.3 kg per week / 1.2 kg per month (0.7 / 2.6 lbs, respectively). I don’t have a target weight per se, but ideally I could be massing for 4 months straight at the mentioned pace and end up having better body composition at 65 kg than the last time I was at that weight (late January 2017, 17% body fat).

As to nutrition and activity: I plan to keep my activity the same, in terms of NEAT (average step count unchanged) and resistance training (5 days a week, focused on hypertrophy). Same with my diet (mostly clean eating, high protein all the time, high carb on training days), I’ll just be eating more and the main adjusting variable will be (healthy) fats: peanut butter and olive oil will be my friends!

I just started a week ago.  Felt a little overly challenged because I was starting right on the edge of my Holiday Season.  Yesterday was Thanksgiving and I still managed to lose a pound in a week. So I'm happy with that, would like it to be more but I'll take it.

Friday will be my weigh-in day.

@SQUEAKY — Welcome.  I really admire people who start a weight-loss program during the holiday season.  Just paying attention to what you are eating, writing it down or logging it in fitbit or MyFitnessPal, is likely to lead to some weight loss, and this is the time of year when people pay hardly any attention to what they are eating.  My wife started around this time last year and is just a few pounds short of losing 50 lbs over the year.  I am so proud of her!

I, on the other hand, gained about 5 lbs from October to the end of 2016.  I got my act together and started losing in January, but it took me six weeks to get rid of the weight I put on in the fall.  This year I am actually trying to gain weight and finding it kind of hard.  What a difference a year makes!

@Dominique -- big favor to ask -- I think it was you who posted a link to a great video by a doctor and researcher (last name started with M) who found that by altering our physical environment and adopting the behaviors of skinny people (have a bowl with 2 types of fruit, sit facing away from the food at buffets, put snacks in one cupboard, etc.) people were better able to manage their weight without willpower.

Can you repost that link?  I can't find it after searching your posts and my viewing history.

Thanks!

I haven’t done the kitchen makeover he advocates for, but that’s on my to-do list! One thing skinny people do I also do is scout buffet tables in order to be able to cherry pick the items I find most appealing Smiley LOL

@Baltoscott, I am also curious to hear from @Dominique of what a typical Fin diet looks like and what his typical diet looks like.

@tamado: Unfortunately, the average modern Finnish diet isn’t anything to write home about, given that 65% of adult males are overweight and 20% obese (females: 46% and 20%), and 10% of the total population is diabetic. In that respect, it’s probably not that far away from the SAD.

As to my own diet, it recently evolved from flexible dieting (80% healthy, 20% junky) to the stereotypical bodybuilder type of healthy eating (picture me with chicken breast, rice and broccoli neatly packed in Tupperware containers Smiley LOL). It’s not quite that rigid, but the underlying idea is the same: lots of protein from lean sources spread over several smaller meals, lots of "healthy" carbs (rice, oats, whole grain, sweet potatoe etc.), veggies with every meal and a minimal amount of "healthy" fats (olive oil, nut butter). I’m currently doing it as an experiment, but even if/when I no longer continue, I’ll probably retain some elements of it.

@Baltoscott - Thanks for the welcome and the incentive. Applause, applause to your wife. Yes, starting this time of the year can be difficult but if I can get through my Holiday season with some success that will be more incentive.

Even when I can't log my food intake, I'm eating smaller portions and really mindfully eating. It's nice to be able to log into whatever our journal of choice is  but I think mindful eating helps a great deal too.

Yes, a year can make a huge difference.  Hope you're need to gain weight was not medically induced and that you'll reach your goal.

Interestingly weight has been almost unchanged in November (still higher than prior to my trip to the US), but BF% has been going up and down:

2017-11-27_1243.png

 2017-11-27_1247.png

The past week was the "deload" week of my resistance training mesocycle, which may explain the drop in BF%. The new mesocycle I just started is focused on "metabolite training" (lighter weights for higher reps with very short rest periods between sets). It’s something that I have never done before and it should be quite brutal, especially the last week (overreaching). Will be interesting to see if it’s disruptive for BF% (as perceived by the Aria scale).

Normally I would be upset about that 1 pound gain, but last week included Thanksgiving and a Birthday. Also I think that I am retaining a bit of water weight due to a but higher sodium intake than usual. I am anticipating that it will go back down in a day or two. Plus my low this last week was 190.3 lbs so if I can get back to that by a week from today I will be content.
