I’ve always been able Tony’s on my Fitbit screen without having to press the side button to view but suddenly I can’t.

Try a double touch. If the finger slides durring a tap it will not be a tap. 

I'm not sure if the charge 3 has a sleep mode, If it does, turn it off. And also check DND
