Got my Charge 2 in January and the sleep stages have never consistently shown, despite resetting, changing positions etc etc. They may for a day but then revert to the basic info. However, I may have cracked it. For me (maybe not others) it seems to need to be in a very specific place on my arm - the slightest bit out and it won't record. Bit irritating as it goes wonky when I have to take it off to recharge the battery but I will persevere as this is one of the key reasons why I bought it.

I think I have found that Fitbit is quite specific where it needs to be positioned in order to record sleep stages correctly (on my body anyway - maybe I'm just built weird). Position Fitbit 3 fingers from bony point on top of wrist (1 finger sitting on top of bony point). Make hand into fist and have fist face you. Fitbit needs to feel that it is sitting midway across arm (twist it slightly to ensure positioned correctly). If I do that, sleep stages always registers correctly.

Thanks for stopping by @Sussex_Lass, I'm glad to have a new member here! Sorry to hear about the inconveniences you've been having with your sleep stages.
As you clearly mentioned in your post, you need to make sure that you're getting a solid heart rate reading , since sleep stages requires consistent HR. For best results, wear your device higher on your wrist (about 2-3 finger widths above your wrist bone). The band should feel secure but not too tight.
Since I also own a Charge 2, one thing I recommend is switching your heart rate setting to 'On' instead of 'Auto.' If the heart rate setting is set to 'On' your heart rate will always be active. If you were to turn off heart rate, your sleep logs will go back to the classic style.
In addition, I think it's great that you update the Fitbit app to the latest version (iOS and Android). I always recommend keeping both the tracker and the Fitbit app up to date with the latest versions.
Also, please take a look at all the requirements for receiving sleeping stages in this post.
Give this a go and let me know how it goes!
