Greetings,
my wife wants a different Fitbit and I am taking her brand new Charge 2. How do I reset to factory settings so that I can use it?

Have you disconnected the Charge 2 from the Bluetooth menu of your girlfriends phone? Not doing this could keep your phone from seeing the Charge 2 if her phone is nearby.
Otherwise there is no reason why you should not be able to set the Charge 2 up to your account, at which time the Charge 2 will be removed automatically from her account.
At what step in the setup process does it fail? Also what type of device is being used to setup the Charge 2?

I've got a brand new charge2 which refuses to set up on Windows10. The advice is to try a factory reset. One of the steps is to remove the charger from the device while holding down the button, which is just not possible given the design of the charger. I've tried a reset which didn't work. Any ideas?

With the Charge 2 you will never be told to do a factory reset. simply because there is no procedure to factory reset the Charge 2. You are reading the instructions for the Charge HR a completely different device.
You say that it refuses to setup on a Win 10 computer. Has your Fitbit been setup through a phone?
With the Win 10 computer have built in bluetooth?
What type of error if any do you get?
At what step does the setup process fail?
Sorry for all the .Questions but it would be nice to know what is happenonghto narrow things down.

This is incorrect - I was not looking at the wrong instructions and the factory reset instruction is definitely given when the fitbit setup application fails to recognise the device. I have spent many hours and consulted a number of experts over this, including fitbit live chat, who could only make the most obvious suggestions. I think the answer is that the device is not designed to work with a PC, and it should be marketed as such.
It is very poor customer support to blame the customer and I have lost all confidence both in the device and the organisation. I will be returning the fitbit.

It does work with a pc, many people do use their pc, with win 10 the Win 10 app is best. If the pc has built in Bluetooth it should work, if not the Fitbit dongle may be needed

One other option is to use a Fitbit Dongle to sync. The Charge 2 does not come with one (older trackers did), but I bet you can contact support and sweet talk them into sending you one.
You may use the Windows 10 Fitbit App and Fitbit Dongle to sync your Fitbit. You can even use the Fitbit Connect (this requires the Fitbit dongle) to sync your Fitbit. I'll warn you that the moment you run Fitbit Connect on Windows 10, it'll prompt you to switch to the Fitbit App (since it has more features, like challenges and adventures)... but if you just close that window, it continues to run quite happily.
While I rarely ever have problems syncing, I have found Fitbit Connect to be the most reliable way to sync.

I can see that some of you are trying to do a factory reset because you are not longer gonna use the Charge 2 anymore and want to pass it to someone else. Well, if this is the case, let me explain to you that the best way that the data on the Charge 2 gets deleted is by setting up to another account, 'cause a factory reset doesn't guarantee that your data will be erased. Also, I'd like to add that once you delete your Charge 2 from your Fitbit account, do it as well from your Bluetooth settings to remove the bond. To do so:

How exactly did you determine that this is a soft reset and not a hard reset?

To understand why a thread has been marked solved, one must read the original post and the marked solution. The original poster is the person who marks a thread as solved .
The question was:

The solution:
You don't need to do a factory reset. simply set the tracker up as a new Fitbit to your account.
Note since then the process has changed,, the previous user needs to do a final sync before handing the tracker over.
Basically in February of 2017 this tgreadtwas hijacked and the current subject has nothing to do with the solution.
Soft and hard resets go back to the early days of the Personal Computers.
A soft reset was done by the Three finger method. cntrl. alt, delete. This simply restarted the operating system without turning the power off. Any virus in memory was often not removed.
A hard reset was done by shutting the computer off andcturning the power switch off. This was and still is needed sometimes when the hardware isn't responding. Like when a computer or phone will not printpto a printerpand a restart of the printer will not work.
The charge 2 does not have the ability to turn it's power off. Therefore there is no hard restart option, unless the battery is left to die. This is not advised but has been mentioned on the forum to fix a problem when the normal restart failed to.

But we are back where we started. I cannot find in any place a solution to hand over my fitbit charge 2 to my wife, because what is marked here as a solution, is not realy to reset the charger.
But rather something else that is a factory reset described below

I was trying to sync to a Windows10 laptop:phone signal here is pretty bad. The laptop could see the device in bluetooth, but the device couldn't see the computer. The instructions were inaccurate & unhelpful, and the help chat I thought rather rude and patronising. I sent the thing back - lots of people seem to have had this trouble though, so if you have a solution, please do post it!

@sajoch simply sync your Charge 2 one last time.
Hand the tracker to your wife .
Your wife will then setup the tracker as a new device to here account .
