Fitbit Charge HR stuck in updating mode permanently

Two days ago my Fitbit Charge HR that I purchased 4 years ago froze up during a recent firmware update and is now permanently stuck in updating mode with a partially completed status bar on the Fitbit device screen.  I tried all of the tricks and advice I could find on the internet to fix the problem then finally called Fitbit support who walked me through a few options to recent the Fitbit with no luck. The service agent explained my Fitbit is one of the older generations and it wasn't able to complete the update and therefore rendered my Fitbit useless. Since my Fitbit was no longer under warranty, the best they could offer was a discount coupon for a new device.  I complained that it doesn't seem fair or ethical for a company to ruin someone's device with an update that was working fine before the update then expect them to buy a new device.  I told the agent they should replace my Fitbit Charge for free but she said they would not. This whole thing feels like a scam to force people with older versions of their product to buy one of their newer products.
