I assumed the Fitbit just detected when I was exercising and turned on. However I have walked five miles today and nothing seems to have registered after syncing. Am I supposed to turn the device on somehow before starting to exercise ?

Welcome to the forums!
I have found auto detect a lot iffy so I always use the exercise function to make sure I capture.
This article has everything you need to know. But how to turn it on is the 3rd one down
Hope to see you around!

Thanks for the reply. However having to read an article to learn how to turn the device on is not user friendly.
I log into my Fitbit account. A message says you have not synced lately. Yet there is not sync button on the app. My device has not synced since last June. There is no button to make the device sync with my modern Android phone or desktop.
Poor product.
